A visitor from United States posted Mon April 12, 2010: The third MCDU is on many long haul aircraft and is used for error capturing. The three IRS systems verify aircraft navigation information against each other and if one of the three is reporting information different from the other two, the third one is assumed to be faulty and its data no longer used. It is impossible to do this same error capturing over oceans (out of range of ground based navigation aids) with only 2 IRS or MCDU units.
