Caption
The CATB (Cooperative Avionics Test Bed) aicraft on final approach for a landing at the Lockheed Martin Fort Worth Texas plant. The CATB is a modified Boeing 737-300 used to test the mission systems of the F-35 Lightning II. The external modifications include a sensor wing forward of the main wing, added structure on the top and at the bottom of the fuselage and a modified nose representing the F-35 nose. The only thing missing is a pair of P&W F135 motors (although the Lightning II only needs one !)...

Do you expect Lockheed to use a C-5? I suppose a C-130 might work, but it's probably cheaper to use a 737 than to take a plane they were going to sell to do flight tests.
