Check Captain Eduard Euwens was my godfather. He died 1978 with his crew in this airplaine in Brazil. He was the cousin of my father, Richard, who died in July 1974. I was boy of 1o years. In loving memory of both, with tears in my eyes. Robert

Sadly crashed due to ATC error whilst operating as Lufthansa flight 527, GIG-Dakar-Frankfurt, date July 26, 1979. Flight crew Eduard Euwens, 38, First Officer Peter Kern, 34 and Flight Engineer Hans Jung, 28. The accident site is close to the tiny village of Pau Grande, where the great football player Garrincha was born. The aircraft crashed into a forested mountain near the IMBEL ammunition storage, a firm whole owned by the brazilian army. I´m Eduardo Nunes Pimenta, I was a 11 year-old boy who loved everything about aviation, who dreamed of becoming a pilot, like your godfather and my namesake Captain Eduard. I´m really sorry, nice german Robert. We will never forget them.

About one minute before the crash, the captain told his cre "we are under radar vector, nothing can happen to us". The crash was not the crew fault, the aircraft was not properly vectored and ATC gave the crew instructions to maintain 2000 feet, due to traffic inbound to Rio SDU airport, keep a heading of 040 degrees and to increase the speed. Sadly, when the ATC controller turned his attention to flight LH 527 and told them to turn to a heading of 140 degrees, it was too late. RIP.
