D-ABYB (cn 19747/29) Rare window view from Lufthansa's second 747 (showing the port wing flaps) on approach to Kai Tak's Rwy 31 in 1974. The bay below is Chai Wan, on the NE coast of Hong Kong Island. Thanks to Joseph K.K. Lee for identifying the location. Lufthansa Boeing 747-130 D-ABYB took me to Hong Kong from Frankfurt, via Athens, Kuwait, Delhi and Bangkok. D-ABYB ("Hessen", Del: 13Apr1970) was the first civil Boeing 747 to crash - on 20Nov1974 at Nairobi Airport, Kenya, sadly with the loss of 59 lives. Low res photo.

Just a co-incidence. The First B747 I flew in (D-ABYB) was also the the First Civil B747 to crash! WN

Great photo! Amazing to see how much Hong Kong has changed over the years. Imagine flying that routing from FRA to HKG nowadays, I'd love it!

I am thinking if you were approaching to Runway 31 instead, and the place below was Chai Wan. First of all the plane should not be that low in altitude if it was still in Tsuen Wan. Second is that it did not match with the landscape of Tsuen Wan. Do you remember the time when taking this photo? If it was in the afternoon, it should not be Tsuen Wan as the sun should come from the sea instead of from the hillside. Nevertheless thanks for showing us this excellent photo! -- Joseph K.K. Lee
