In Iran there is no ban on ladies becoming airline pilots. The hardest part is becoming captain, although there's no rule banning it, it has not unfortunately happened yet.

Also, to Mahan Air....they have very forward thinking management!

I read previous comments, and the specific subject has stimulated some visitors to discuss differently! mostly those from Iran, the country where, there are so many limitations in newspapers, Tv. and other telecomunications, and such a free tribuns will be wellcomed! Therefore, five stars for young lady 1st officer, photografer, Mahan Air and this tribune as well.

A visitor from - posted Wed September 8, 2010: First of all thanks to Mohammad reza photographer, and 5 star for him, for opening free discussions in this site unwantedly and intelligently ! 5 stars for Mahan air, starting to change the atmosphere of personnels "not to be for men only" although, it is so pale and weak, while we see the high ratio vice versa in Holland as an example. And 5*****stars to self sufficient first officer for standing amoung men alone to say we the women are existing too! in an Islamic country where the men leadership is special,unic in the world, and very strong!!! Since she was born and up to now, she has been smart, strong, serious, focused and perfect to be the first in any filed, like aviation. She overcame more obstacle than any man could. This picture reflects that well. I am proud of my neighbor, years ago.

A visitor from - posted Mon September 6, 2010: Hey,this is our lovely girl Bahareh Bozorgzadegan who put her power and electronics BS in wardrobe and started aviation soon after she found it is possible to take part to related PPL & CPL classes in spite of parents disagreement ! she tried independently and didnt hesitate in her way to overcome the obstacles. finally she did and now is first officer of Mahan Air. Hope more success and long secure life for her.
A visitor from - posted Mon September 6, 2010: What does make this photo attractive and disputable? we have seen so many cockpit photos,but we have not seen so many comments for those! refer to a nice photo with a swedish female captain in SAS, MC Donnell Douglas DC-9-82 on August 5, 2010 with the number of comments 5 only!? What does make above photo separate from other similar ones with 33 comments since now !? I think most of the commenters feel sympathy with the goal of the young female first officer and respect her struggles in the society, where we know the conditions more or less, and it is great.

I have been amused at the reaction of some commenters who have jumped to conclusions about the role of women in Iran, and particularly about their clothing. To the visitor from the Netherlands: the gold-coloured handles are cockpit evacuation devices located above the sliding cockpit windows. In the event of emergency, you open the window, grab a handle and jump out. A 10m steel tape attached to an inertia reel controls descent. I remember being surprised when I was lucky enough to join a CX A340 crew in the cockpit for approach and landing at Sydney. They briefed me on the evacuation procedure: open the window, throw out the rope and climb down! Old tech compared to the A300!

I do not know what has been the policy? but one lady as a co-pilot and as a sample is astonishable but positive anyhow! regarding headscarf as a post modern symbol of islam,it acts as a head-phone filter too! But anyway,congratulation to pioneer co-pilot young lady and her company Mahan Air, to open more facilities to young women as a crew members in near future.and hope to see front face photos of such a resolved ladies indeed. 5* will be all right for both.

Must have been a long and hard way for this happy women to reach this privileged position. At least a great exception. And it must be a little strange for a captain to achieve a relaxed cockpit interaction having on his right side a first officer he will never see the face. If not shocking, at least a very polemic and different picture.

I bet you she will give the old guys a run for their money when I comes to knowledge and understand of the theory. Many ignorant people here do not understand other cultures and although the tradition is to cover their hair for women, this doesnot mean they will back down or are submissive. Also a lot of the comments here remind me about what I heard colleagues say when they first saw all black crews in Africa.

Its just demeaning towards woman to say you can be a co-pilot, but you have to cover your head. But i am glad for here that she doesnt have to stay home like in all the surrounding countries.

I find it great that they are all enjoying their job and living/working the life as they want. Being a European living in the Middle-East I can tell you that some traditions are changing quickly, and in my mind for the better, but still you need to respect people that like to uphold them.
