Awesom | |
You probably stopped something awefull from happening.........great photography too.
If that was a bird ingestion, maybe a duck or a bird that size. T.B.
Nice photo. Maybe a bird ingestion?
Looks like a compressor stall?
Horror! But beautiful. One of the best shots here in my opinion.
Just very very superb..
Great photo! | |
I bet there were many passengers that needed a change of underwear that day! I love photos that deal with turbo fans, because that is my line of work. ***** Wayne C.
The clarity of the shot is amazing, it's not as easy as you might think getting such a precise moment in time like this.
Rare photo shot. | |
This is one to share with a few friends at work, so thanks. Anyone has wondered about similarities between this incident(Is that the Trent 800?-not certain) and the A380's recent issues with their Trent 900's? Just curious.
Thank you for photo and call !!!
Why did this happen? | |
Once in a lifetime shot! the engine is RR but looks like contained engine failure
Great! This is a once in a lifetime shot.
Very nice photo! | |
Love the detail of the landing gear folding in.
Oh my... What an amazing picture. It's a pitty Malaysia Airlines don't fly to Arlanda anymore, but Air China just started :)
Very clear, good frame, and something special happens...
Incredibly sharp, well focussed and well framed, a brilliant shot even if the aircraft was operating normally. The timing (partly luck) showing the engine problem makes this a once in a lifetime shot.
I think you'll find that the engine has not merely failed, but disintegrated!
Excelent picture. | |
Hello | |
So clear it is almost too real
Great photo! | |
Aaaaaaaawsome | |
Left engine failure and the both Pilot manage to safe the aircraft cool . . . i give 5* for this picture . . . Me Qalifreduced from Malaysia thanks for the picture . . .
Great picture, but I doubt the pilots didn't get any indications.
It must be a cannibal its eating little Cessnas!
Just amazinG! | |
Great! | |
Truly Amazing! | |
Interesting photo and interesting remark!
Interesting remarks with very good informations.
Awesome, I can't say anything more. Just awesome, thanks for sharing!
Nice shot -wakki philippines
Superb Detailing at the right time!
Good timing. | |
Great shot! a rare moment to be taken...
Still my desktop at work :) Awesome picture and great story behind. 5/5
Really great photo, it is very cool you were able to take a shot of a moving air craft without the picture being blurry! Did they figure out what happened to the plane's engine?
Very clear and sharp, steady shot.
Very COOL and lucky shot ! congrats !!!
Phenomenal clarity and detail. Splendid control of the ambient lighting and great subject matter to boot. TY again for this treasure.
What a clean plane this is.. Hail MAS
Yes, the quality is superb. Great time Fredrik
That must have been alot of fuel to dump. I agree with the sentiments of commenters below, wonderful job in contacting the duty manager and alerting them of the debris and being able to tell the crew the left some of number 1 on the runway.
Dis is a well taken picture and good to hear that di plane land safetly
Really amazing! | |
After years ... still the best shot on a.net
Fantastic shot! Nice to hear the plane landed safely.
Oh wow, the quality of this pic is superb...In both visual and reporting aspects.5 stars without a doubt.
Nice | |
Great focus and detail on the departing pieces of engine.
Detailed..nice one! | |
A superb shot that tells of an engine in trouble, you can almost hear the shattering noise!
Nice nice photo... | |
No birdstrike and it was not the engine itself. If I remember correctly it was coating or insulation from the engine cowling.
Was it a bird strike or an engine failure? Great shot!
What I like best is that Aviation fans might have saved some lives onboard that plane that day....just maybe.
Sharp detail on moving subject. This photo is incredible
What was the problem exaclty?
This is really scary, considering im an uncompanied minor, but it is good to know what happened, so airplanes always check the engines.
I think this picture looks awesome! great footage. I like how you can see the big picture and see the debris and smoke.
Great photo with all details of falling debris. Great effort of alerting the airport staff. Glad to know that the aircraft landed safely later
Fantastic shot with lots of details. My compliments to those who have called in the duty officer, pieces on the runway can cause major problems for incoming and outgoing traffic.
Beautiful work !!! | |
The possible reason why it's no rudder deflection is that the image is taken about one second after the "boom", the pilots have not reacted yet.
Quite interesting that there's no right rudder deflection, as certainly the #1 engine had lost power at this point. Very nice photo!
Im surprised that the passengers in the last five rows didnt alert a flight attendant...
Amazingly clear and educational.
5 stars for this really great en super sharp picture. Great capturing at the right moment. Congrats
Outstanding picture!!!! Great timing!!!
Thats what i call "looking after each other with care". pilots cannot see external problems and really is up to ground staff to be informative and alert too. well done to all those involved.
You should sell this shot to Nikon as well. Might have sold me on a camera & lens
Awesome quality, "great" moment.
It's very fantastic | |
Absolutely awesome. | |
Nice shoot | |
Talk about perfect timing! This one was year 2006 greatest accident photo! Great job Fredde
Great shot, the plane looks very new indeed. Absolutly great timing there!
not only the clarity of the plane itself, but the debris as well.
What timing!!Very clean photo, good job.
Thank god nothing happen & nice picture amazing
This pictuer is incredible! Especialy when someone could get a picture that good!
Wow | |
Very very nice pic .. thx !
Great shot on failure | |
This photo is truly amazing. i am glad no lives were lost. well done.
One of the coolest photos I ever seen!
Epic. everything mentioned above, focus, exposure etc but also a picture that is of interest to non aviation enthusiasts too.
Amazing photo. Glad everyone landed safely.
Wow what a great photo! Crystal clear, perfect lighting, great angle and amazing to see the debris falling! I hope the newspaper paid you appropriately for that shot - its absolutley brilliant. I'm glad that the plain landed safely - though i suspect it looks worse than it was and the plane was never in danger.
VERY NICE | |
Love the lighting(especially on the back half of the plane) and clarity of this picture. Just amazing.
Clean picture | |
Amazing shot. The angle and lighting makes for a beautiful, yet a little scary, image
Cyrstal clear shot depicting details of the events prior to gears up. This could be only the works of a genious. Bravo!
Super sharp, nice image, perfect
The clarity of this picture coupled with the impressive real time critical action is phenomenal.
Its awesome | |
Outstanding place to be at that moment for a photographer!
Superb clarity! Great shot!
That's plane scary... | |
Wonderful pic | |
Great Photo. I love the small pieces of debris on the smoke trail
Details of blown engine pieces are awesome. Never have seen this close up shot of airborne plane, in mid flight.
Excellent background, excellent light, just a great picture. The smoke is just the cherry on top!
Impressive! Just wondering what sound did you hear in this special moment.
This is an amazing shot. The sky is clear, the picture detail stunning. Just awesome
It's all been said above, but great timing, subject matter, composition, framing - congratulations!
Superb clarity. Nice positioning. Great timing.
Good colour, sharp focus, unusual circumstance and as with most but not all photos- being in the right place at the right time!
Awesome! clear picture and ability to see the debris falling from the engine = very cool
I've never seen anything like it. Right place, right time, sure, but this is perfectly exsposed, as sharp as a tack and full frame. What else is there? Very nice work.
Wonderful, clear shot!
Nice sharp focus. Excellent framing of the subject. Great action photo skilfully done.
Very nice photo. awesome angle, and at JUST the right moment. A+++++
This picture clearly states that we, plane spotters, are NOT criminals or suspects whatsoever but pure aviation fans. Frederik's attitude clearly showed that - spotters should be respected and taken as friends nearby airports and NOT foes. The shot itself was precise - great lighting, crispness and richness of details of #1 engine going bezerk. Regards for the shot AND attitude Frederik !
5* for capturing this moment! really impresive shot!I imagine your expression after seeing this thing happening before your eyes!
You where there at the right time! Great shot! Congrat!
Excellent captured. the timing was perfect
Very rare shot! Once in a lifetime!
Fantastic! | |
Wonderfull! | |
The quallity is very good
Fantastic shot! Broken engines are very difficult to capture, especially Rolls Royce ones. I've seen P&W & GE engines go up in smoke on 777s a few times on various sites, but due to the reliablilty of RR engines, its hard to capture them. Thank God one finally went! Great photo. 5 stars!
Fantastic sharpness | |
Picture of the year! | |
Nice picture and you had a lot of luck to catch this in the right place and in a perfect angle. This one is the most perfect pics ever here in a.net. In one word, SUPERB!
Nice Pic.maybe that component in engine too old and have hevvy pressure.my thing
Amazing job! perfect framing with fragments seen in trail
Great deal and presence of mind!
Great picture! No more to say. Is it detached honeycomb materials flying next to the nice looking 777? Nice work Fredrik!
Well captured... | |
How to be in the right time on the right place. Five stars !
The exact moment to make that particular picture, excellent!!!
Nice story to go along with a magnificent picture!
All necessary elements for a great pic are there. The pic is so good some of my photographer friends don't want to believe it is real. It is real folks!
Wow fantastic shot really. The pieces of metal look small though would the tower be able to notice it besides the smoke from the engine? Just wondering.
SUPERB...! Thanks for share it, with US..!
O no!!! | |
One in a lifetime shot !!! Clear, detail, best angle, best moment, and best action to report to Arlanda Duty Officer. No indication in the cockpit with that kind of problem ??? That strange. Imagine if it happen in the middle of no where and no one to tell you that your eng has blown
It still baffles me how the plane took off and landed safely. Fredrik, great pic and thanks for sharing!
Hello and thank you (again) =) The camera settings was 1/640 sek, aperture value 6,3, exposure compensation -2/3 best regards Fredrik
Very rare that damage to engines are documented like this.
Perfect timing to catch this 1 in a million shot!
Holly s... That must be the best 777 shot ever. And I'm glad they landed safely :). BTW, aircraft is very clean and shiny.
Right moment, Right place, Nice shot
Wow! right time right place well done fredrik
A Well captured picture showing the fragments of the engine falling back to the runway
Visitor from ireland,,excellent foto.but dont forget the fear the passengers must have felt?scary?
We in MH had a tough time reallocating the affected paxs, but they've all been successfully sent on their way; mostly via LHR. First time I'm seeing a pic of the stricken a/c. Plane was last B772 to complete cabin retrofit and re-entered 29Oct. Latest info - 9M-MRI is OK now. Was ferried back to KUL and landed 2229/09NOV lcl time.
Great!!is it possible a T7 can climb with mtow with only one engine??
Amazing picture Fredrik! Grymt bra jobbat!
Fredrik, the photo is GREAT (light, sharpness, drama) but I'd also wish to thank you for comments and the camera details you added! Hey webmasters, could you please add a special "six stars" rating for this one?
It takes extreme luck and skill to produce such a shot, Many thanks for sharing Fredrik.
An amazing shot! | |
Technically superb! And what a timing regarding the debris from the engine.
With so many digital cameras snapping all the time, it was only a matter of time when somebody will come up with such a brilliant photo like this. One star for each clearly visible piece of debris! I'm thoroughly envyous. Bravo!
The quality and details make it worth a 5-star rating
Great shot! | |
Once in a liftime | |
Very interesting picture.
Great shot. Spectacular picure taken at the right time from the right spot. Five stars for Fredrik. Broken Rolls Royce (engine) is not easy to capture.
Good job, well done.I appreciate you noticed about smoke. That´s the best think you should do, save people maybe.
Totally amazing picture! Five Stars * * * * * !!!
The picture is very clear with a bright blue sky. Details are far reaching.
Nice photo! Beautifull exposition, autor released his chance 100%...
You have to be an alert and experienced photographer to catch a situation like this. Clean picture too. Very good.
I read about this engine failure in the newspapers. Great shot!
Thank you all, what can I say more then whats already have been said? I was incredibly lucky and I'm very proud and happy. I'm sure that any of you sooner or later will have the same chance to get a shot like this. best regards Fredrik Granberg
When you snapped this pic, did you know that it would become all-time best airliners.net image? Makes Maho Beach and A380 formation shots look like amateur work.
You have a great shot of all the stuff comming from the engine, and the tires tucked up with the landing gear doors ready to close.
An excellent piece of photography
Whoa stunning photo! But it's not good seeing engine parts being spat out of the engine! Lucky they landed safely.
I have never seen a more spectacular picture as this one! Absolutely brilliant! Well done Svenske nabo...
Drama, colors, composition, and a happy ending (except for the repair bill!). Well done.
Great shot. I was just on this plane last week on a flight from KL-ARN-EWR. Glad it didn't happen then.
It takes great skill, good timing, good equipment and a matter of the right time and the right place for a shot like that. Its great to see the details as well, such as the debris from the Trent. Very clear and good focus as well......well done!
Perfect shot Fredrik! Razor sharp, perfect light, perfect timing withb the gears retracting. 5 stars no discussion.
Fantastic shot. You must have spent a lot of time sitting on your butt at the airport to run across one like this!
Not only have you press the shutter at the right moment, you have also managed to capture a very nice picture. It looks so clear and sharp! at least 5 stars!! well done.
Luck and timing... | |
From Stockholm to Kuala Lumpur is definitely not a short distance, who knows what would happen next. I can imagine the moment when you inform the officer, the shot in your camera would surely speak a thousand words.
A superb shot with good light and sharpnes of the whole aircraft and the pieces flying out of the engine
Good nerves to go on clicking when something like this happens. And right now the counter says 100000 distinct views when I look on your photo, that is 50000 per day = well deserved! /Frippe
Good shot! Peoples was fell scary
As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Absolutely brilliant picture, marvellous detail, superb composition! Pity about the engine...
What a shot! It's as though you asked the plane to pose for you! Talking about perfect timing! I am sure you are pretty pleased with yourself after taking the shot.
It looks great.!! there are some chips emitting from the no 1 engine
Sensational action shot with all the drama of what could potentionally have been a disaster.
Very clear picture, which shows what happens when an engine fails shortly after take off.
Very clear and detailed shot. One in a million shot.
This must be one in a million shot! Your action saved the lives of hundreds. The world need more ppl like you. FANTASTIC shot and person! Keep up the great work! KCW
Wow! Great shot! | |
Great shot! You don't see such a situation on a photo very often !You were at the right time at the right place !CONGRATIULATIONS to the photographer!
Simply great! | |
Compare with the No. 2 engine and you can see what is being thrown out by No. 1. Probably the most expensive scrap metal you can get ahold of. Poor engine.
The timing that the photo was taken was perfect.luck for the photographer as well.well done. and a great point of view to advise the tower control of the icindent.congratulations.
Excellent shot! Really love the clarity and glad everything resolved alright!
The very best I've ever seen. Bravo to Fredrik for this and thank you for sharing with us!!!
Good to get all the details from the failing engine
Great pic ever seen. | |
Great pic. really. | |
When I grow up I want to take pictures like Fredirk! WOW, what an amazing picture. Shots with such detail are nearly impossible.
Maybe a bird was sucked into the engine??? a lose fan blade?
One of the best shots ever on this site!
Best timing, bravo for photograper..... keep it up good job.
Right photographer at the right place and at the right time :P!

Thanks for sharing! | |
Perfect ! | |
Amazing shot! | |
Great shot! What luck to be ready to shoot and watching that particular plane
Incredible shot thanks to a total readyness and a perfect reaction. You are the one!
A picture says more then a thousend words.
Sharpness, lighting and, above all, timing is stunning. Just in the middle of gear up, with smoke and debris clearly visible streaming out of the left engine. Superb shot!
Very nice! | |
What a moment! You can even see the metal pieces falling off from the engine!
Five stars for you Fredrik! You deserve every view, rating and comment on this pic, it is absolutely superb and the sharpness is perfect! That happens only once in a photographers life and you got it! Congratulations and thanks for sharing it!

Holy Cow! Glad to know that everyone was safe. Great shot! Stunning picture! Arch
All my congratulations for this great shot. I hope nobody on the ground got hurt by the fragments!
After all I think that the Malaysia airlines is very good company and also has young fleet,I mean something like this could happen to any airline in the world!Photo and timing is superb.
Thank you everybody! All I can say right now is that I'm very happy and honored that you guys (and girls?) have rated my picture and given it the "The Photographers Choice Award". I never thought it would happen to me. Again, thank you! /Fredrik Granberg.
OMG :o Undeniably THE PHOTO OF THE YEAR for me! Thank God it landed safely, Thumbs up Fredrik for such an unprecedented shot. Regards from The City of Sails.
A great moment of this photo is very detail, that you can the debris falling off the no.1 engine, well done! Still there is a happy ending!
On the spot when it happens. The detail is magnificent even the "bits" coming out of the failing engine!
Well looks to me that a blade let go.Good photo, thank god everyone is ok.
A truly decisive moment. Great timing, great capture. Congradulations!
That's one amazing photo! Glad to hear all returned safe & sound on that obviously beautiful day.
Great detail in shot - you can see the parts in the air
This is stunning - glad this wasn't a disaster - great shot!
Talk about being in the right place at the right time!! Catching the debris as this engine shotguns itself makes it an even better capture. Thumbs up to you sir!!
Great pic! visit malaysia?? for sure! but not on malaysia airlines!
Amazing pic. Good reason to prefer 4 engines over 2.G-)
Men.........talking about been at the right place/time. Gracias !
Good quality with an extremely rare shot. Keep it up.
Malaysian Airlines should thank you and award you in no doubt as first class member forever.
Just Great! Congrats!! :)
Wow that must have been creepy to see inside the plane.
Yikes! frightening for the passengers on board! i also doubt that'll be cheap to fix! great shot with a perfect blue backround...i already made this my desk top image!
One in a billion shot :D Amazing photo!
Perfect picture in all senses, and good that it comes with a happy ending. The only ones complaining will be Malaysia Airlines...five stars!
Just like to add that all the debris is from the Boeing D Duct. The Trent continued to operate, and when we opened it up in the hangar, there was only minor work on the engine
Wow, great picture Fredrik!
The worst possible invitation to visit Malaysia next year...
I wont be flying to Malaysian anytime soon after this pic. jk lol
WOW this photo is great, im glad you share it with us!
Sick shot. amazingly clear too- you must have been excited when you saw that...
Everything is there! The moment, the aircraft, and the happy ending.
A great shot! Catching the debris really makes this one outstanding. Congrats.
Absolutely awesome, a once in a lifetime shot !
Nice | |
WOW..perfect timing, great shot,It´s once in a life time shot.
I was out on the highway on the way home to Sigtuna when I saw it coming. Great picture and congratulations on the excelleent full spread in Expressen... gramlin - http://www.se-esd.se
That's an awesome photo, but so bad the engine had problems.
Talk about timing. Impressive. Nice, detaled, sharp picture!
An amazing timing. I am happy anything bad happened and it landed safely.
Photo of the year! Thanks for sharing this rare and critical moment. The photo quality is superb. Good work, Nikon... ;-)
WOW , what a great picture !
Well done and what a great shot! And you guys have saved the day by notifying the Arlanda duty officer! Who knows what could have happened if the plane continued on to Malaysia. Well done indeed!
Nice Shot buddy! Perfect timing, congratulations. good thinking you called the authorities! rgds, Doraku-san
Excellent! | |
Beautifully taken m8 well
Thanks for posting this picture. I was hoping someone would after seeing the thread about this in the forums.
WoW nice timing ! | |
Hous....err Stockholm we have a problem.
Rolls Royce Engines?? | |
Very good quality shot and we can see clearly the fragments of metal. Good job!
Mrlee what a great keep up the good work.
Excellent Capture!!! Better to dump the fuel and get back on the ground, pay for a new engine from GE (or RR) to be brought in and have a tech crew look over the starboard wing. And pay hotel bills for the PAX until a replacement can be brought in or have them rebooked elsewhere.
Wow this is what i call the perfect moment to make a pic :-D
Fantastic! great timing
What happened..?? Probably you got really nervous and excited when you saw that, right? Probably you expected something worse to happen. Still you managed to get a perfect shot! Respect...
Like he said, You lucky bastard!:D I've been waiting for this pic in 2 days! Finally! Thank u!
Adnako...:) | |
Nice shot, very clear. not everyday you see something like this. glad they made it back.
Superb shot! Rarely do we see such things! Thanks!
Excellent skills demonstrated by all: photographer, pilots, and ATC.
When I read the notice´bout this I hoped that one A.nutter would be there and take a pic... This is such a great comunity ... I love it ! 5*
Way to go Fredde... | |
Incredible capture. Right place, right time! I'm happy the aircraft was able to land safely.
Wonder what the pilots will think if they ever get to look at this photo. One scary moment for them. Glad it all worked out safely!!
You called the duty officer?! Great! So saved hundreds of lifes! What an amazing pic!
Excellent shot, definitely right place, right time! Catching the debris sure is interesting, just thank God nobody was hurt. Very well done...five star shot! Jaysen - Wichita, KS
What a Pic. Well done... and thanks for proving that spotting makes sense
Amazing view of the debris!
Spectacular! | |
I'm glad i wasn't on that plane, seeing the smoke i would've freaked out! Nice photo!
Right place , right time and perfect light ! Gongratulations for this picture. Good to hear that nothing strange happened to the jet and people on board.
FIVE STARS! Incident caught on film.
Wow! What an awesome capture! Three cheers to the aviation spotting community :)
Wow, fantastic! Well done Fredrik. A rare moment captured for all to see. I love the fact that you got the debris. Excellent - 5*'s
Perfect timing! What a great shot, Fredrik!
You lucky bastard ;). Congratulations on a great picture. But it's going to be really expensive for the poor airline.
This shows how helpful plane spotter can be.
Amazingly rare photo. Isn't so exciting that there's always some fellow spotter to catch on film each and every single incident? Bravo!
Good capture | |
Thank you very much for your comments. Yes it really was one in a million shot. I sold the picture to the swedish newspaper Expressen and they gave the picture one spread in colour! I'm very proud AND very happy that that the pilots managed to land again without incident. best regards Fredrik Granberg
Brilliant shot! Hats off.
More than a good photo, a good decision in calling the aiport warning about the problem! Good one!
Is inncredible. Great photo!!
Great photo! Very good that you called too... What if noone else would have noticed...?
Pictures like this are rare to see! The image is extremly crisp, the colors are vivid, the TIMING this photographer had is superior! And just look at the debris flying from the left engine - is that a fan blade I see? Once in a lifetime shot - congratulations!
Spectacular shot. | |
Dramatic picture! They were lucky there were witnesses on the ground who saw the incident.
Thank you for this amazing picture. Now there will be a lot of discussion about this one for a long time to come.
Caught in action, great shot to see those parts behind scrapping around, fortunatly landed safely...
Great capture | |
Awesome | |
Nicely captured event. Once in a lifetime shot!
Clear photo of what happens when one of those turbofans begin to self-destruct!
The technical quality of the photo is very good... excellant resolution and exposure against the bright background.. The detail of the problem with #1 engine plainly visible and the gear in transit gives the photo a quality of immediacy. All in all... very good.
