N4AZ (cn 1) I drove from San Antonio to El Paso just get this frame it is a great pity that this didn't go into production as this is a very good looking aircraft and the only one made, scanned from a slide in my collection.

It has 4 engines not for the thrust, but for redundancy allowing it to cross the Atlantic. ETOPS did not exist when the aircraft was developed.

This must be an extremely loud aircraft, with its 4 turbojet engines!

Four engines may seem overkill nowadays, but in the mid-50s, when this plane was developed, the early jet engines didn't have much thrust, and take-off performance of the larger early quads (like the earliest 707 and DC8s) was only marginal at best.

The B52, which is from the same era, has 8 engines, if it were developed today it would certainly be a twin.

5 stars for the most ridiculous design...
4 (!) engines for such a small aircraft...WOW!

Looks like a Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner with DC-8 Engines.

A visitor from United States posted Tue July 12, 2011:
Looks very much like the B-58 Hustler bomber of an earlier era. (late 50's to early 70's) Search "B-58" and compare.

A visitor from United States posted Tue July 12, 2011:
A sleek tail fin! This must be the smallest quad-jet ever built?

A visitor from - posted Mon January 31, 2011:
Very neat biz-jet...Too bad the biz-jet market didn't exist yet

A visitor from United States posted Tue July 27, 2010:
Maybe a designer in common with the B-58 Hustler? Possibly a competitor in the Lockheed L-1329/C-140 Jetstar market? Now, if this came with Afterburners... HA! DtD

Such an odd plane, looks like a Gulf @ the front, then mini DC-8 engines. Nice pic
