This indicate failure of the outermost layer. When the outer fail, the windscreen remain transparent, when any other fail the window looses all transparity and you cannot see through it. Thats how you determine which layer has failed.

I love the fracture pattern with all those arcs and branches.. You could almost see the propagation. Wonderful!

A visitor from United States posted Mon January 31, 2011:
For those not familiar with airliner windshields.....they are VERY thick, and consist of many individual "plies" of glass and acrylics; I'm guessing that the fractures are confined to possibly a single "ply"?
Very interesting photo......thanks for posting it!

It's Mexicana's XA-MXO... You can read it below the AP-Disengage-Button.

I suspected as much. Thanks for the info and also thanks to the photographer for posting this ;)

To possibly answer the question below: Photographer could be the pilot or maintenance, and understands that the airline would not appreciate a pic of their airplane on the web after an emerg landing. He's interested in keeping his job!

A visitor from Canada posted Tue November 30, 2010:
Very good photograph. Any idea why the tail number is not mentioned? Somehow I doubt the photographer was unable to provide that information?

A visitor from United States posted Tue November 30, 2010:
This is what happens when the windshield heat stops working.

A visitor from Canada posted Tue November 30, 2010:
Whoa! What happened to cause that? And thanks so much for the photo!
