DLR (German Aerospace Center) built this 2.5 meter diameter infrared telescope for SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy). Weighing nearly 20 tons, it is the world's largest airborne telescope. Science flights are scheduled to start in 2009. We are seeing the counterweight and the instrumentation section. The telescope itself is behind the pressurized bulkhead.

Great photo! Two of my three favourite things together: Aviation and Astronomy together. I have some stickers from this project in my suitcase since three years, and I was wondering about how is it going.
