The top cabin space on the SCA is very sparsely decorated. The wallpaper is still JAL from the 80s. The aircraft is stripped to save weight. It was purchased from JAL and transformed by Boeing to this very unique role. Initially, NASA only had one such aircraft but post Challenger the recommendation was made to acquire a second back up aircraft. At the end of the program, this aircraft is planned to be cannibalized for spare parts to keep the NASA SOFIA 747SP and N905NA (the ex AA SCA) flying.
