Remark Photographer
OV-103 (cn OV-103) 10:39:10 AM. STS-114 "Return to Flight" Mission begins the Roll Maneuver. Note the increadibly long flame from the Solid Rocket Boosters which provide 71.4% of the power ( 3,300,000 pounds thrust each). The vehicle begins a combined roll, pitch and yaw maneuver that positions the orbiter head down, with wings level and aligned with the launch pad. The orbiter flies upside down during the ascent phase. This orientation, together with trajectory shaping, establishes a trim angle of attack favorable for aerodynamic loads and crew ground reference.

Orbiter 103 has been the beast of burden with the highest # of missions (33) in Space. Discovery, the 3rd orbiter to become operational at Kennedy Space Center, was named after one of 2 ships that were used by the British explorer James Cook in the 1770s.
