Those are not tumors but the aft orbital maneuvering system/reaction control pods on Discovery. In orbit, the Orbiter is controlled through controlled burns of the OMS/RCS. Upon re-entry, RCS pod burns control the Orbiter’s attitude and angle of desent.Below 45,000ft the RCS pods deactivate and the Orbiter becomes a glider.
