Many photographers flocked in front of the Launch Pad 39B to watch the service structure rolled away from Discovery at 6:00 pm on June 30, 2006. Despite the fact that the Discovery was not illuminated by the cocktail lights while we were allowed to be there, it was truly a breathtaking moment. As the initial launch attempt in the following day had been scrubbed because of the weather, it finally had hurtled into orbit on July 4 -- the first Fourth of July Launch attempt in NASA's history.
