OV-105 (cn OV-105) With commander Chris Ferguson, pilot Eric Boe and flight engineer Stephen Bowen in the cockpit, the orbiter's 3 hydrogen-fueled engines ignited at 120-millisecond intervals, creating a man-made cloud of steam as the exhaust hit jets of cooling water. 7 seconds later, after flight computers verified the engines were spooled up and in spec, the orbiter's 2 solid-fuel boosters ignited at 19:55:39 H, hurling the 4.5-million-pound "stack" towards the Heavens.
