The last comment is correct, they just use the jets for takeoff and during drops, they also use the same type of fuel for both engines IIRC.

You misunderstand the purpose of the podded jet engines then. They have nothing to do with added range, but with reducing take-off distances and improving climb performance. Once they have done this, on this type, they get switched off.

Beautiful aircraft. Sad story. It has four engines but two of them use different fuel. That seems like a big drawback to range/endurance on that aircraft.
