This is the P-51 scrambling off the runway, gear halfway up, its Merlin engine screaming for altitude, and in the moment it was caught, it reminds us of this aircraft's glorious history to rise to the fight as no one before it.

Excellent composition. The pilot is NASCAR tycoon Jack Rouch, he has a second P-51; "Gentleman Jim". Just caught a shot of "Old Crow" myself at Oshkosh this year. Fantastic plane. Fantastic Photo.

Priceless oportunity for that pilot! Excelent shot, have you noticed the rudder position to keep this beauty (with all it´s 1,750 HP developed, and a big 4 blade prop) aligned on take off?

The greatest fighter of the WW2 and the best of the warbirds, there's no greater sound than a Rolls-Royce Merlin at takeoff, outstanding shot, I wish I could have been there!!!!!!!!!!!

Just awesome. Hear that Merlin! A Mustang is more welcome in German skies now than it was in 1945, I bet. Bet it brought back some memories to a few old Luftwaffe pilots.

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Fri August 19, 2005:
Brilliant use of a powerful zoom lens. Maybe the full wingspan should have been captured but other than that the image is crisp & clear.
A visitor from Australia posted Fri August 19, 2005:
Top shot. Excellent framing (cropping?)I actually like it with this background and its great depth of field.
A visitor from United States posted Fri August 19, 2005:
The detail is very good but the only problem is that the background is a little distracting... I suppose that it isn't always possible to get solid background though. Great Job!

I love the exhaust plume behind the Mustang.
