Remark Photographer
N280US (cn 21159/1179) This is what can happen when foreign material is ingested into a engine. NW005 MIA-MSP was forced to land in TPA after losing an engine over Madison, FL. No injuries were reported. This photo was shown in the New York Times and USA Today. NTSB incorrectly quotes the reg as N2280 (which does not exist).

I've never before seen an engine missing from a passenger jet that wasn't fomerly attached to the wing.

I am a retired aircraft and i remember hearing about this incident when it happened. i also remember faa's requirement dump the forward lavatory and deactivate the lavatory. the cause engine falling off was the torque generated by the sudden stoppage of the engine it injested big chunk of ice had built up on the external drain port of the forward lavatory. the faa reqired this action on any aircraft reguardless of make or model.john mckenna

Truly a unique photo.
But the engine isn't lost; it's right there in the grass!
