I've never before seen an engine missing from a passenger jet that wasn't fomerly attached to the wing.
I am a retired aircraft and i remember hearing about this incident when it happened. i also remember faa's requirement dump the forward lavatory and deactivate the lavatory. the cause engine falling off was the torque generated by the sudden stoppage of the engine it injested big chunk of ice had built up on the external drain port of the forward lavatory. the faa reqired this action on any aircraft reguardless of make or model.john mckenna
Truly a unique photo. But the engine isn't lost; it's right there in the grass!
