The roar of the engines on these craft were very distinctive. I used to recognize them in the 1950s landing over my boyhood house near MSP, flown by Northwest Airlines. They were quite a sight, and I thought them beautiful, carrying the promise of far off places.

The picture is beautiful, but the 377 was really UGLY....

These captains really had a panoramic view over the sky in those days.

B377 is such a beautiful airplane. Great shot. Thanks. It would be great to see more of these.

Great shot, I have a pricture someplace (I hope) of myself waving from the cockpit of this aircraft at IDL about 1960 (it has the PA MEATBALL logo then), that my father too (he was with PA for about 40 years). Some day I will find and scan I hope.

Ever since I was a small child, I was captivated by B&W shots of the mighty Strat. This picture is no exception, and I am grateful you shared it with us.

Looks like there isn't any nose gear due to the little jeep/trailer. Cool. The way you used to board an airliner, no jetways! Built on a B-29 "chasis"?

I would like to have o photo like this one in my collection... a REAL photo, that is ;D.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot... the "superjumbo" IS ugly. The ugliest, most ridiculously looking airliner ever made. The Stratocruiser here almost look like a ballerina compared with that... thing.

A visitor from United States posted Fri October 1, 2010:
Superb photo. Bird strikes on that nose must'a been pretty messy.

A visitor from United States posted Fri October 1, 2010:
It's not "ugly," it's "beautiful in its own way" :P

A visitor from - posted Fri October 1, 2010:
Yes, but the Strat was ugly in a lovable kind of way; it had character! The Whalejet is, well, just the Whalejet!

A visitor from Australia posted Fri October 1, 2010:
Put that mug next to an A380 and then tell me the superjumbo is ugly...
