The power of vision. Dear Boeing 747, no matter what happens with your production, your glorious legacy is already sealed and etched in gold. Thanks for being a vision helper to billions.
I could be wrong but the middle aircraft looks like it is "Clipper America" which was the delivery name of N747PA (later "Juan Trippe"), the second aircraft delivered to Pan Am. It was also the first B747 involved in a serious incident (at SFO) and it was also the LAST aircraft to fly in Pan Am colors in 1991, including a famous fly-by at JFK airport representing the last hurrah for a great airline. I was lucky enough to fly on N747PA in 1984, one of the earliest flights that I remember taking.
Nostalgic picture of a healthy world ...
I can hardly believe this photo is more than 43 years old! The quality is astonishing!
Wow, amazing how clean these look just out of the paint shop. They didn't stay clean long did they?
My heart breaks a little more every time I see pictures of the great Pan-Am.
Those ~were~ the days! A real blast from the past! Capt. Dan Northwest Airlines (Retired)
Too bad 736 crashed at Tenerife.
This photo is simply magnificent!!! To say "I wish I was there" would be an immense understatement XP... I can't thank you enough, Mr. Hill, for sharing this shot, this glimpse of the early days of the 747s career. This airplane took part in endless of my daydreams, and will remain a part of my life for as long as a live!!! 7474EVER!!!
What an amazing photo! Thank you!
Great photo! | |
What an awesome photo! Thank you! I miss these old airlines.
Wow! The quality of this picture makes it feel like it was taken just recently (echoing most of the comments on this photograph). Thank you for sharing such a gem, David. Perfection!
This photo brings back memories. i used to have one of their die-cast model toys of the pan am 747. this looks to be before they switched the cargo door to open out wards (that was a bad idea) now they reinforce the latches with steel locks instead of aluminum.
Great line-up showing the Pan Am dominance of the first orders of this wonderful bird!
I was there! What a great Photo! My father (Capt. Robert Hummel) was one of the first group of seven pilots chosen for flight training out of Roswell, New Mexico in the 747. They chose Roswell because it was away from large population centers, and they liked the 300' runways that had been built for B-36 bombers. I accompanied my father from New York when he went to visit the Everett plant, and the local newspaper did a story him, (Ken Knudsen was the reporter's name as I recall). since he was originally from Everett. I'm pretty surel we visited in July of 1969. A beautiful picture that captures how great these brand new aircraft looked, that most of the world had yet to see in person.
Indeed, bring on the jet nostalgia! The fitting behind the hump is the fairing for the sat-com/sat-nav. Found to be redundant due to other nav systems, they were all removed.
Great quality for a photo taken more than 40 years ago! 5*
Amazing! I'd find it difficult to take a pic like that with the newest digital SLR. @ "A visitor from Ireland posted Fri March 27, 2009: Amazing quality and very rare. Does anyone know what the fixture attached to Victor just past the hump is for?" Looks like the hoist point for the fuselage section. Seems to be right over the centre of gravity.
Amazing shot. Whenever I think of Pan Am I think of the 747. They used to sell a Pan Am toy airplane in the gift shops at PHL and it was Pan Am. I loved that little toy. I miss the days of Pan Am and the great Clippers.
These were the days, hey
This photo brings back memories of an October 18, 1969 morning, while pre-flighting my Piper Cherokee, I heard a roar and looked up to see a huge unfamiliar jet practicing take-offs and landings at Roswell Industrial Airpark, New Mexico. I later learned it was a Boeing 747-121 and Pan-Am pilots were trained there before the 747 entered service.
Amazing quality and very rare. Does anyone know what the fixture attached to Victor just past the hump is for ?
Wow! I don't know what to say. This is simply a very stunning and historic photo! I love it!
Pretty good photo. A great moment on airliners story.
Great pic!!! I know one of them is the imfamous Clipper Victor (was destroyed in the Tenerife accident), but what're the names of the other 2? And which one's which? P.S. Pan Am Airways' airlines had "Clipper" at the beginning of their names
Really crisp and colourful image from 69'... really impressing mate, do you know with what camera it was taken? thanks for share!
747 is Pan Am and Pan Am is 747. This pictures hints at the introduction of the most exciting wide-body in aviation history and the airline (Pan Am) that would be its greatest herald.
The widebody era was about to begin when this photo was taken. Historic photo of a great aircraft belonging to a great airline. Five star photo !
Amazing photo. Looks like it could have been taken yesterday.
What a beautiful shot, all about history when Pan Am asked Boeing to make a large aircraft that can carry hundreds of pax, and yes Boeing made these beautiful birds, and now it is mastering the skies.
Oh the glory! | |
3 craft in 1 shot-with a tail to boot! cannot get better than this!
Clear, sharp, colorful from 1969 - like it was taken with a digicam yesterday. The 'cottages' for each of the Jumbos, the fact that the pic is a look into aviation history, when the 747 is about to go into service. And it is PanAm - Alltogether this is a breathtaking foto. Thanks for sharing!
Very Historic photo. Foreground is N736PA - Clipper Victor - that was tragically lost Mar 27 1977 at Tenerife - in a collision with a KLM 747-206B - the world's worst airliner accident. The photo captures the excitement of what was to be the aircraft that transformed air travel, for decades hence. What a beautiful bird and what a great vissionary airline was Pan Am.
I have seen this shot before and i am still amazed how impressive this shot is considering it was taken in 1969..I was really amazed that it was taken at that time!
Three beutiful 747s and the highest quality picture from the sixties Ive ever seen
That´s what I call clean !!! I´ld love to see PanAm coming back !
Amazing quality for 1969-5 stars
When you took this stunning photograph you couldn't have supposed how historic it would appear, decades later. Thanks very much for scanning and uploading it.
I love this photo. There is nothing in the photo that dates it, it could have been taken today... Great shot.
A nice piece of aviation history. Thanks.
Unique and historic photo and also excellent digitization!
Thank you Sir, for such a wonderful picture. It would be another 12 years after this picture before i was born - now a Commercial Pilot myself i would like to see more history just like this - maybe some from Ernie Ganns day! - again thank you!
The quality of this picture is really impressive considering the age of it. Did you know that N736PA was the PAA aircraft that collided with the KLM 747 on Tenerife?
What a clear picture!!!
What a wonderful moment in history. Thank you for not keeping this to yourself.
Very interesting how precisely parallel they are positioned: even sun flashes at same points on noses of all three!
1969 !!!!! mémories....i love Pan Am
This is an awesome photo, just look at the clearness in the colors of these very pretty birds getting ready for many great years of service' great work mr.hill
Great picture. I wish that Pan Am still flew today.
Cool! I agree with the people who say that this picture looks like it was just taken recently. Really looks like a modern photograph!
This photo looks like it was taken recently, great quality and an outstanding perspective of the beginning of the 747.
Just stunning...Unbelieveable how clean and pure those planes look in Everett. Almost looks like it was an old DisneyLand ride or exhibit. When Pan Am and the 747 were king (and for me, 74 is still the king of the sky).
It's ad to know this was the actual aircraft that was involved in then, the world's worst air disaster at Tenerife.
Wow! I was thinking of this last week when I was at the old Pan Am Worldport at JFK (now Delta terminal); I was born in '69 and as a New Yorker flew these beautiful 747s often with my parents. PAA was really the ultimate airline and something NYers and Americans could be proud of; an era gone but hopefully not forgotten thanks to people like David, THANK YOU
Man, I must agree with everybody. I have no words to describe this. The only thing I can say is: thank you very much for sharing this truly treasure with us.
Those were the days... | |
I can almost smell the paint comin´ out of those babys. T.B.
Looks like this shot is new... Very good quality
Excellent! Gotta love Pan Am!
Excellent Picture, looks like if taken a few time ago.
Long time ago | |
Great photograph. You will NOT see this agai. Rooster
When I saw the thumbnail of that pic without the information I thought it was some 747 "graveyard" or something taken not too long ago, but 1969???? Unbelievable to see real images in 21st century quality of such times!! Would love to see more, perhaps some 707 action? :-)
Very hard to believe this pic is 37 years old. The quality is simply too good! Excellent pic!
Nice, keep the good work!
A great picture, but something caught my eye... The name on the closest 747 is a little faint, but appears to be... Clipper Victor. Which would be N736PA, which would take part the first commercial 747 flight. And later be destroyed at Tenerife.
Excellent quality. I love the soft lighting on these new birds! Great to see when Pan Am was still at the forefront of aviation.
I join the others and I have to agree: judging by the image quality and the lack of an "era indicator" (such a car, a cloth, a haircut, etc.), it seems perfectly that this photo was taken literally yesterday! Curious!
This is a fantastic shot, and truly fascinating. Thank you for for uploading!
Wow, amazing picture. Its great too see the old times so 'near'. Unbelievable atmosphere! For such an old picture very colourful and of extremely HIGH quality!
Wow, what an excellent and historical picture! Thank you very much for uploading it.
Incredible quality !!! 1969 !!!
What a pic hey this one speaks a thousand words . Just fantastic thanks for sharing
David, thank you for this contribution. More, please!
What a great scan and how I love it as wallpaper! THANK YOU!
Thank you! First time I've ever seen a picture of the first 747's in production!
Great photo, a piece of history!
Stunning pictures! welldone
Great to see this historic picture. Thanks for sharing. Fabrice S.
