This photo is simply stunning not only for its historic value but for its fantastic subject. This 747 is classy and simply beautiful in those Panam colors.

I can only agree. It reflects the time when PanAm had lots of success.

That's one POSH tail number. And a very nice picture. Thank you, Frank.

Great aircraft, good to see the old Pan Am colours and the shot was taken the day before I was born.

This -1970- shot somehow has more depth and realism than one taken in 2011 with the latest digital camera.

I flew on N747PA back in 1984 - on flight Pan Am 103 no less! She was named Clipper Juan Trippe by then, and probably deserved to be preserved instead of scrapped unceremoniously in South Korea. She was also involved in one of the first major B747 incidents less than a year after this photo was taken, almost crashing after takeoff from SFO.
Thanks for posting!

Nice picture. If I'm not mistaken this was the 747 that was destroyed at Tenerife.

Ah! The Glory Days of the airline industry. I miss those days compared to today.

Legendary #2 off the line.Would have been nice to see her restored to the likes of this photo after the collapse of Pan Am.Was the second one built, but the last to be delivered(oct. 1970)out of the 25 ordered by Pan Am in 1966.There's a video of a tail-scrape test with this plane on you-tube.Also news footage of her leaving JFK for the very last time in may of 1992,as PAA-staff wave her off, and sign their names on the fuselage.

Great plane. By the way, the one at Tenerife was N736PA.

I didn't see anyone mention the American Airlines 747 tail in the background. That's a pretty rare sight.
