Remark Photographer
N741PA (cn 19648/17) Pan Am's 'Clipper Kit Carson' makes a historic First daytime touch-down on Rwy 16 at Sydney's new International Airport. Staff arranged stands so the public could see the First Boeing 747 arrival in Australia on 04Oct1970. Pan Am's B747-121 N734PA arrived at night, 9.5 hours late. Crowds turned out three days later when N741PA arrived on time. (Pan Am's First New York to London B747 Flight was on 21Jan1970.) Sydney has now seen the world's First A380 Airline arrival - Singapore Airlines 9V-SKA on 25Oct2007

This brings back great childhood memories of standing on the headland at Coogee Beach with my father and many others watching this plane come in from its flight across the Pacific. Love the proximity of the crowd to the runway - how times have changed and not necessarily for the better!

This photo illustrates a milestone in flight history.

A visitor from Mexico posted Sun March 20, 2011:
I miss those times where the human being was able to admire and awe aviation from up close, no security filters, no bad intentions, only the joy of watching metal birds fly to the sky...

A visitor from - posted Fri July 30, 2010:
I was at Sydney KSA on that day to see this monster land - i was 20 and ended up working for Ansett - best job i ever had - back then (1974) you could drive just about to the taxi way and do a lot of aircraft watching - its gr8 to see the QF 747 hanger in the background being built - thanks for the pic - Neil

Wow! if people could get that close to the runway now it would change the kind of photos on the site for sure. good job, i wish that i could have seen that

A visitor from Australia posted Sun March 23, 2008:
Wow! You can't get up close to the runway at SYD like that anymore.

Very special milestone in commercial aviation history, just like the A380, except this was 37 years ago. An excellent day for anyone that enjoys aviation!

What an historic picture you brought to us all, really thanks you!
I've feel like if I was there that day, but it so amazing see how the aviation business has grow in so little time, now, justo 37 years after that very moment we can see an even bigger aircraft in the skies.
