G-AXLR (cn 829) ‘XLR had been diverted from the RAF batch to Rolls Royce for use as a flying test bed for the RB211 in the late ‘sixties & early ‘seventies. (The 211 was mounted on the left side.) The aircraft was consigned to the scrap compound at ‘A’ Site, 5MU, RAF Kemble in about 1977 and lay there derelict, as shown here, for a number of years, and there were rumours that it was used for training by the special forces. This picture was taken in 1982.
