RAF VC10 XR809 was diverted from the production line to Rolls Royce for use as a flying test bed for the RB211. It was de-commissioned at RAF Kemble in the late ‘seventies, and is seen here in the winter of early 1978 alongside a Shackleton MR.2 which had been left over from those converted to AEW.3s at the start of the decade, and which was in the process of being scrapped.
