Lukla in 1977. The plane on the left had landed very heavily and was now used as a chicken coop.The prayer flag was also the windsock, and the fields to the right of the strip were terraced with the wings of damaged planes.

That's the Lukla I remember. All dirt. One RNAC pilot was so good on approach, he never reduced power, and made it up to the ramp (out of view to the left). Most reduced power to land, then added power to taxi to the ramp.
Take off was easy, get to the top, release brakes, add power. Everyone was in the air well before the end of the runway.
The hike off to Namche and Everest is begins immediately to the right of this image (which was probably taken from the trail)
Sometimes you had to wait for several days to get a flight - weather, and then the backups due to weather. Or you could walk to the closest bus - about 5 or so days away.
