Anonymous

I wouldn´t dare to do this, but it sure is a suicidal and daredevil act. T.B.
Anonymous

The speed they are traveling at a height (altitude) no greater than his landing gear would be extended.
he also must use good judgement when he pulls up to go around - a tail drag would ruin his day

What a sleek, gorgeous, perfect jet, nice paint scheme, *and* fairly good flying skills to boot! Wing commander: "Piotr, were you drinking before flight? Maybe you transfer to naval hovercraft unit, da?"

Excellent picture...it demosnstrates how fast this plane must begoing for there to be enough lift. yet it seems frozen in time.....
I would love to se this same scenario with vapour tracers to see the airflow underneath the plane!!

May be it is my emotion about what plane pilot does and not the quality of the image itself. But this image caught my attantion right away. I just like it a lot.

The pilot's technique is outstanding. The maestro's name Anatoliy Kvochur. He also shows this trick above water - looks even better. He's neither landing nor taking off - he's flying over runway. Patrol de France's and Fracci Tricolore's planes are much lighter, but they can't repeat the same trick.
Anonymous
Unbelievable! I wonder if both pilots are involved in controlling the plane at the moment or one of them is flying and the other is praying to the God of Altitude Controls... Amazing piece of flying!
Anonymous
I have a friend who as engineer and he passed on the following in regards to the posts asking about the speed of the Sukhoi in the picture:

Based upon the angle of attack, and adjusting for ground effect, I would estimate his speed at something close to 300 knots. Any slower would require a much greater angle of attack and much faster would begin to form some type of condensation in the air around the plane.
Anonymous
Exelent moment of life.
Anonymous
The pilot's name is Anatoliy Kvochur. The trick looks even better when he flies over water.
Anonymous

Anonymous

WOW. This is impossible, or I thought it was. But after I saw this picture, I found out that nothing is impossible for russian pilots.

Now THAT's what I call high-speed taxiing...! Would love to see the adrenalin levels for these guys, especially the back-seater along for the ride.
Anonymous
I see in an earlier commentary that the pilot is Anatoliy Kvochur, a wonderful individual as well as the consumate test pilot...! He was also the pilot who took a bird strike (at Farnborough I believe) in a Mig-29 and performed a zero time ejection only after making sure the crowd was safe and that the aircraft couldn't be saved.

Every time he exists the cockpit following a flight display he does a roman press, revealing just how composed he is...!! He also has a hand-shake like solid granite.

On top of it all he is the most humble person you could imagine in spite of his obvious talents...!
Anonymous

Beautiful picture of a very clean aircraft!!!

considering how quickly the aircraft was flying by (some have said ~300kts) I am especially impressed by the clarity and crispness of the aircraft markings and rway lines aft of the aircraft.
Anonymous

Those Russians sure can put on an air show!
Does that look like the inflite refueling probe
sticking out the upper left of the nose.
Anonymous
Amazing pilots and amazing photographer!
It just looks like it is hovering in mid-air.
Anonymous
Holy %#*@ blown away by this pic. Does it look as though the inflight refuel probe is extended. If so why on earth ?
Anonymous
Not only is the detail and colours dramatic, the mere feat of flying at that height makes the picture all that more dramatic.
Anonymous

Great photo showing the precision performance of both airplane and pilot! One mistake and its all over, but the pilot holds it together!

It's amazing that this photo should have captured the plane flying at its outrageously low altitude. it must have been a truly difficult shot to get in the frame as well, as the plane would have been going incredibly fast. I guess the film speed was extreme as well, since the background is not blurred

Absolutely splendid. A thrilling moment and cutting-edge shot of a heavy and large jet in cruising configuration but at grass altitude. It looks like a still plane or a magnetic levitation craft.

The pilot (guts, Jedi-like mastering) and the photographer (clear image, crisp colors, no blur) met perfect conditions (wind, place, camera, light, ...). Five stars for both skilled men.

The Transonic or Supersonic Wave will create trmendous splashes from the water surface and the engines will digest alot of water through its intake therefore a flame out of the engines is inevitable.

Precision at its limit, both the pilot and the photographer, although people used to the metric system if taking a thorough look at the proportion of the plane size and relative objects around will see it's not at 1m from the ground - but indeed as daring as it can be.

It captures the exact control that such a pilot must have to be able to do this.
It is a perfect static image of a combat plane, i like how uou can see the pilot and copilot clearly en everything under control.

That plane is not moving - if it were, there would be visible compression waves off the tail. Go to youtube and search for "blue angels three passes" for the best low fly by ever!
Anonymous
Also, how come the air is not distorted around the exhaust?
Anonymous
No way guys, theres no photoshop used in this pic.
First of all theres no exhaust, because the pilot turned the engine on idle. And why shouldn't that be possible. If you fly an airplane for several years in flight shows you surely have a very good feeling for it. Pidarassi wi vseh!!!

It don't take as steady a hand to do this as one might think, I saw B-1 Lancer driver do the same thing in full after-burner (wish I'd had a camera set up for that). It has something to do with what is called boundry layer air, pilots report that at certain speeds over flat terrain they can't force the airplane into the ground. BTW I read an account by a B-36 crew man about a major who became angry over some silly rule and did a buzz job at his home air field (Carswell AFB I think) and got a royal chewing out from the base C.O. who afterwards told him it was the best buzz job he had ever seen. Too bad nobody caught that on film!

Nice Pic! This is easy to do in any plane because of "ground effect". The air under the plane has nowhere to go when the plane is so low resulting in a cushion that's hard to break through at higher speeds.

"Too Low Gear"
Anonymous
Yes, this is an excellent shot of an excellent pilot. The real danger at this altitude is in ingesting some FOD and killing your plane. As the center of flight control is about half-way back at this speed, the pilot can't just yank back on the stick for altitude without putting the back end in the dirt. Not good for the airplane or one's career. As to the comment that US pilots would never fly like this, we would take our F/A-18s into the lonely country NE of Miramar (California) for some "practice" and our plane captain would always bitch about the chunks of tree leaves and plants caught in the gaps and cracks. We always paid him off with beer until one day, after some particularly brutal "practice" he said "your need to come see Major Wilhite's ride!" There, in the left slat, was a chunk of hide, maybe rabbit or fox or something. We just stared at each other and laughed. Was that low enough for you? Semper Fi!

Flying lower than 1m. That's less than 3 ft agl. If you were to try to drop the gear at that level, I'd wager you'd be too low. The margin of error here is insanely small. This is one heavily smacked gob on this end. Well done, pilots and photographer.

Anonymous
Since its very close to ground on the Lower side there will be Lower pressure under, and higher pressure over the plane. Thus even the relatively smaller air pressure variations otherwise will have much greater Effect here, smacking the aircraft to the Ground. Thus its BASICALLY an act of Bravado and skill I would say
Anonymous
Ya that's what. even if the altitude is low, but the Intake suction is still much strong to create pressure difference between lower and upper sides of Intake. Also the pressure variation under the Wings are substantial.

This is the kind of precision flying that ace students of the golden era are capable of. They knew their job better than they knew their wives. Quite a contrast when you think about the captain of Crossair Flight 3597 who failed to perform navigation and landing procedures on numerous occasions.
