After more than forty years of flying, once in a while it is fun to watch someone make a landing and either grease it on or screw it up. It's pretty easy to tell what's going on even from an easy chair beside the runway. Good picture.

Nice shot! One day I'll sit in a chair like them... It's nostalgic.

5 of 5, a really great shot! I wouldn't mind living near an airport, but this as a hobby would even be better. Thanks for this picture!

Schipol where they welcome spotters! Heathrow and Gatwick please note; there is a canal which prevents access to the airfield (unless you want to get wet!)

It is not to bad when you are old, if you can see things like this one. :)

It's not stupid... If is was, they would sit somewhere else with a not so good view: the police station. There's actually a little canal between them and the runway. --- By the way, this is just a fabulous picture... it would be at any major airport.

Memberships in the elite "retired spotters club" are very hard to obtain but if you can get one the rewards are wonderful!

Just the beers are missing! apart from it this IS what retirement should be about

This is definitely the best picture on a.net!!
it shows how people who have fallen in love with aviation stay with it by just taking some lawn chairs and friends to go planespotting at the local airport.

I love that picture! last year I was there on that spot, looking at all the heavies and the cityhopper fleet of KLM. too bad that spot is closed...
now I'll go to the speacial spotting site at the mac-donalds and under the approach path for the Polderbaan. I Love EHAM!

I'm jealous about these peole, not only because they are so close to this great brazilian/american invention but also because they're retired in one of the most beautiful/fair/organized countries on this planet (NL)... I hope I'll make it to holland too one day and perhaps i'll have the same view of Eham, Tot ziens ;D (Andre-Brazil)

Aah, this is all a spotter needs after his retirement! On the left among the KLM Fokker 50s you can spot an ATR in KLM Livery! Must be one from KLM's commuter subsidiary, KLM Exel. Plenty of turboprop action back then... Not anymore now the Fokker 50 left the KLM Cityhopper fleet :(

To the commenter from Israel, its a great photo, you cant assume every country in the world has the same security risks as Israel.
Anonymous

Fantastic photo, and the visitor from New Zealand is totally right! in Israel i wouldnt let people enter the airports safety zone and get so close to the runway but hey man, this is the Netherlands - there is a big difference and by the way, in St. Marteen the aircraft are flying some 6 or 7 meters over visitors at the beach and land immedeatly after passing them - so where´s the difference!?

Talking about retiring, how about those F50's in the background?! Shame, no (turbo)props in the KLM fleet anymore. Missing em already.

It´s always fun to drive to EHAM for a spotting day. Take great pictures, eat a salmon baguette in the restaurant, enjoy the scenery and friendly people.
Safety? Don´t swim through the water, security will get you on the other shore...

Wonderful shot!! Just lovely... Makes me wish there was an xtra chair.

The contrast between foreground & background is simply amazing. Two different worlds w/the plane unifying them.

Older old people used to watch trains. Younger old people just prefer planes. Both were and are good choices!
