This photo brings back memories of an October 18, 1969 morning, while pre-flighting my Piper Cherokee, I heard a roar and looked up to see a huge unfamiliar jet practicing take-offs and landings at Roswell Industrial Airpark, New Mexico. I later learned it was a Boeing 747-121 and Pan-Am pilots were trained there before the 747 entered service.

A visitor from Ireland posted Fri March 27, 2009:
Amazing quality and very rare. Does anyone know what the fixture attached to Victor just past the hump is for ?

A visitor from United States posted Fri February 6, 2009:
Wow! I don't know what to say. This is simply a very stunning and historic photo! I love it!

A visitor from - posted Thu September 18, 2008:
Pretty good photo. A great moment on airliners story.

A visitor from United States posted Tue September 16, 2008:
Great pic!!!
I know one of them is the imfamous Clipper Victor (was destroyed in the Tenerife accident), but what're the names of the other 2? And which one's which?
P.S. Pan Am Airways' airlines had "Clipper" at the beginning of their names

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Tue July 15, 2008:
Really crisp and colourful image from 69'... really impressing mate, do you know with what camera it was taken? thanks for share!

A visitor from United States posted Sun May 18, 2008:
747 is Pan Am and Pan Am is 747. This pictures hints at the introduction of the most exciting wide-body in aviation history and the airline (Pan Am) that would be its greatest herald.

A visitor from Brazil posted Sat March 1, 2008:
The widebody era was about to begin when this photo was taken. Historic photo of a great aircraft belonging to a great airline. Five star photo !

A visitor from United States posted Tue December 18, 2007:
Amazing photo. Looks like it could have been taken yesterday.

A visitor from Kuwait posted Thu September 27, 2007:
What a beautiful shot, all about history when Pan Am asked Boeing to make a large aircraft that can carry hundreds of pax, and yes Boeing made these beautiful birds, and now it is mastering the skies.

A visitor from United States posted Sun September 2, 2007:
Oh the glory!

A visitor from United States posted Sat August 11, 2007:
3 craft in 1 shot-with a tail to boot! cannot get better than this!

A visitor from Germany posted Mon July 9, 2007:
Clear, sharp, colorful from 1969 - like it was taken with a digicam yesterday. The 'cottages' for each of the Jumbos, the fact that the pic is a look into aviation history, when the 747 is about to go into service. And it is PanAm - Alltogether this is a breathtaking foto. Thanks for sharing!

A visitor from Australia posted Fri June 15, 2007:
Very Historic photo. Foreground is N736PA - Clipper Victor - that was tragically lost Mar 27 1977 at Tenerife - in a collision with a KLM 747-206B - the world's worst airliner accident. The photo captures the excitement of what was to be the aircraft that transformed air travel, for decades hence. What a beautiful bird and what a great vissionary airline was Pan Am.

A visitor from Philippines posted Fri April 13, 2007:
I have seen this shot before and i am still amazed how impressive this shot is considering it was taken in 1969..I was really amazed that it was taken at that time!

A visitor from United States posted Fri April 6, 2007:
Three beutiful 747s and the highest quality picture from the sixties Ive ever seen

A visitor from Germany posted Sun March 25, 2007:
That´s what I call clean !!! I´ld love to see PanAm coming back !

A visitor from United States posted Wed February 14, 2007:
Amazing quality for 1969-5 stars

A visitor from United States posted Fri February 9, 2007:
When you took this stunning photograph you couldn't have supposed how historic it would appear, decades later. Thanks very much for scanning and uploading it.

A visitor from United States posted Mon January 22, 2007:
I love this photo. There is nothing in the photo that dates it, it could have been taken today... Great shot.

A visitor from Canada posted Sun January 14, 2007:
A nice piece of aviation history.
Thanks.

A visitor from United States posted Fri January 5, 2007:
Unique and historic photo and also excellent digitization!

A visitor from Australia posted Mon December 25, 2006:
Thank you Sir, for such a wonderful picture. It would be another 12 years after this picture before i was born - now a Commercial Pilot myself i would like to see more history just like this - maybe some from Ernie Ganns day! - again thank you!

A visitor from Sweden posted Sat December 9, 2006:
The quality of this picture is really impressive considering the age of it. Did you know that N736PA was the PAA aircraft that collided with the KLM 747 on Tenerife?

A visitor from Chile posted Tue November 14, 2006:
What a clear picture!!!

A visitor from Australia posted Wed September 13, 2006:
What a wonderful moment in history. Thank you for not keeping this to yourself.

A visitor from Norway posted Mon August 21, 2006:
Great picture. I wish that Pan Am still flew today.

A visitor from Japan posted Sun August 20, 2006:
Cool! I agree with the people who say that this picture looks like it was just taken recently. Really looks like a modern photograph!

A visitor from United States posted Sun July 16, 2006:
This photo looks like it was taken recently, great quality and an outstanding perspective of the beginning of the 747.

A visitor from United States posted Sat July 8, 2006:
Just stunning...Unbelieveable how clean and pure those planes look in Everett. Almost looks like it was an old DisneyLand ride or exhibit.

When Pan Am and the 747 were king (and for me, 74 is still the king of the sky).

A visitor from Trinidad And Tobago posted Mon June 19, 2006:
It's ad to know this was the actual aircraft that was involved in then, the world's worst air disaster at Tenerife.

A visitor from United States posted Fri June 16, 2006:
Wow! I was thinking of this last week when I was at the old Pan Am Worldport at JFK (now Delta terminal); I was born in '69 and as a New Yorker flew these beautiful 747s often with my parents. PAA was really the ultimate airline and something NYers and Americans could be proud of; an era gone but hopefully not forgotten thanks to people like David, THANK YOU

A visitor from Brazil posted Sun June 11, 2006:
Man, I must agree with everybody. I have no words to describe this. The only thing I can say is: thank you very much for sharing this truly treasure with us.

Great photograph. You will NOT see this agai. Rooster

A visitor from Sweden posted Tue May 30, 2006:
When I saw the thumbnail of that pic without the information I thought it was some 747 "graveyard" or something taken not too long ago, but 1969????
Unbelievable to see real images in 21st century quality of such times!! Would love to see more, perhaps some 707 action? :-)

A visitor from United States posted Wed May 24, 2006:
Very hard to believe this pic is 37 years old. The quality is simply too good! Excellent pic!

A visitor from Netherlands posted Mon May 22, 2006:
Nice, keep the good work!

A visitor from United States posted Mon May 22, 2006:
A great picture, but something caught my eye...

The name on the closest 747 is a little faint, but appears to be... Clipper Victor. Which would be N736PA, which would take part the first commercial 747 flight.

And later be destroyed at Tenerife.

A visitor from United States posted Mon May 22, 2006:
Excellent quality. I love the soft lighting on these new birds! Great to see when Pan Am was still at the forefront of aviation.

A visitor from Brazil posted Sun May 21, 2006:
I join the others and I have to agree: judging by the image quality and the lack of an "era indicator" (such a car, a cloth, a haircut, etc.), it seems perfectly that this photo was taken literally yesterday! Curious!

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Sun May 21, 2006:
This is a fantastic shot, and truly fascinating. Thank you for for uploading!

A visitor from Germany posted Sun May 21, 2006:
Wow, amazing picture. Its great too see the old times so 'near'. Unbelievable atmosphere! For such an old picture very colourful and of extremely HIGH quality!
