Though the straight-line great circle distance is over the north pole between KEWR and WSSS, the eastbound flight departing EWR is south of the pole on the Atlantic Ocean side, flying over Northern Europe on it's way to Singapore. The inbound flight to EWR comes from Alaska or slightly above, then down over Canada and into EWR. These routes are flown to take advantage of winds so this flight can make it without stopping. Great picture!

Absolute eye candy for any aviation enthusiast.
I've always thought that the A345 is so well-proportined and looking at it in this shot, thinking about the long trek ahead is just another reminder as to why I love aviation so much.
Nice shot, Carlos.

Great photo of a great aircraft on a seemingly chilling cold New York evening. And thanks to the first poster for the explanation of polar routes.

Beautiful use of ambient light and a long exposure. I didn't realize just how long the A345 was.

I took this flight in Mar 2006. It wasn't boring! I read voraciously, ran my own movie marathon, drank like a fish, slept endlessly and partied like it was July 4th onboard. Randall

Brilliant! The lighting is perfect. This picture really catches youe eye.

And this is one 18.5 hr flight I wont want to get out off. Now these flights only feature Business Class. They've removed the other two cabins because the demand for their Business Class product is really high. I can see why!

A absolutely fantastic shot indeed, however it really shows what a typical New England February Winter Chilly night scene it is and what it feels like to be out on the ramp! Great work, Carlos. Raj, Pleasant Valley, CT

Before Singapore Airlines made it an all-business class flight, it only ever had two classes, business and premium economy...not three.

Absolutely stunning shot. The A345 in 9V livery is probably the best looking passenger aircraft made to date. Nice shot, thanks for sharing!

On November 9, 2005, a Boeing 777-200LR, completed the world's longest non-stop passenger flight, traveling 13,423 miles or 21,602 kilometers eastward in roughly 22 hours and 22 minutes

Prettiest airliner ever built!

Very nice shot, but I like the looks of the A340-300 better with its more graceful proportions and sleeker engines.

Disagreed, The A345 is in my opinion after the 747 (pretty much any version except SP and LCF) the best proportioned (large) airliner there is. In fact, that's what sets it apart for me, and definitely from the too long A346. This is my fav Airbus, followed by the A330-300.

I think the A340-500 is a successful (and beautiful) aircraft despite the belief in ETOPS for twin-engined airliners flying thousands of miles over water. Yes, quad-engined planes are costlier to maintain than their twin-engined counterparts but quads can provide an extra buffer for a two-engine failure because no one can "guarantee" that both engines of a twin-engined plane will never fail simultaneously. On similar grounds, no one can "guarantee" that a twin-engined plane can fly to the nearest destination (from its point of engine trouble) with only one engine running. Personally, I think the bottom-line is an "economics vs. safety" debate and tradeoff for many airlines.
