This photo taken shortly before the NTSB finally released the plane for removal from the accident scene.

A visitor from Germany posted Sun October 9, 2011:
My deepest condolences to the family!! What surprises me in particular is the fact that they did not go around when realizing that there is no solid contact with the runway for some time, being aware of the weather and runway conditions. Why force the landing when it's a critical approach?! I believe the slightest concern is good enough to go around, try again, and if necessary divert. It's too tragic what happened to such a young life.

A visitor from United States posted Sat February 12, 2011:
This is the main reason why the two biggest runways at MDW now have EMAS.

Midway and it's runways were constructed when props were the big airliners. They were long enough then. Unfortunately, there is no room form expansion. Rest in peace....poor kid. My heart goes out to the family.

A visitor from United States posted Sat April 29, 2006:
I love Southwest, but I was on that flight, and I remember all the previous person who posted mentioned. :(

A visitor from United States posted Sat April 29, 2006:
I was on the flt- thought we might be coming in too fast.. When we touched down we just bounced down the runway, no solid contact with the ground at all. Thrust reversers didn't deploy for several seconds, when they did it splattered snow across my window and I couldn't see. After stopping we didn't evacuate for several minutes, everyone exited out the back right door on a fire department staircase. Aircraft will be scrapped for parts once NTSB releases it to SWA.

A visitor from United States posted Sat April 15, 2006:
I have flown southwest airlines several times and am conviced they hire a lot of retired fighter pilots. The big bank angles are fun for me but probably not for most... Lots of spoiler action on aproach, great fun but watch out for slippery short runways. Burbank not wet or that short. R.I.P.

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Fri April 7, 2006:
I am 13 years old and i would hate to be in that possision of that liitle boy.

Sad story that this scene is for realz. Glad the trip wasn't any worse, but too bad SWA has now a tarnished record.

A visitor from United States posted Tue January 3, 2006:

My heart goes to the family of the little boy though.

A visitor from United States posted Fri December 23, 2005:
Very sad! Living in Chicago, I heard all about that on the news, poor little boy that was killed in that .

A visitor from United States posted Thu December 22, 2005:
Ok, I have had to land A320's for United for about a year now and I am telling you, even in the best weather and conditions, if you land short even by 800 feet, you will not have enough time to stop on that runway. Even with thrust reverser on maximum throttle, you with end up on 55th just like that Southwest 737.

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 21, 2005:
Well we know where that boy is today,Heaven thank God.Just study that picture for a minute the nose dropping down as in shame and guilt. it is a very eerie scene,Best detail i have seen yet.

A visitor from United States posted Tue December 20, 2005:
Great photo

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Mon December 19, 2005:
I hope there all ok

A visitor from Portugal posted Fri December 16, 2005:
Impressive and a very sad moment. My congratulations to the photographer for having kept the frames of this tragedy for a few days, instead of going for the "instant fame". If that was the intention then you showed great dignity. Also my sincere condolences to the family of the young boy that lost his life.

A visitor from United States posted Fri December 16, 2005:
Chicago Midway runway 31C is 6,522 feet long but has a 700 foot displaced threshold. Do the math: 6,500 minus 700 displaced minus 1,000 feet to touchdown target equals only 4,800 feet available to stop. If runway is less than dry and you don't have reverse thrust you are in a heap of trouble.

A visitor from United States posted Fri December 16, 2005:
This photo shows the scale of the aircraft relative to normal street traffic (and this is a relatively small airliner!)

A visitor from Mexico posted Fri December 16, 2005:
This is something that to us that we traveled much nonserious good that happened.

A visitor from Taiwan posted Thu December 15, 2005:
My heart is for the pity boy.
Good pic, but the story was heart-breaking.

A visitor from United States posted Thu December 15, 2005:
So very sad for the child and his family. And how disappointing to see so many juvenile comments, especially from this on-line community in particular. Fortunate the consequences were not worse (this time around). (And one of the writers above is absolutely spot on - this event was a big red flag renewing the broad issue about the failure of many airports to increase runway lengths (and install other safety measures now available) in line with the size and heavy traffic of the aircraft now using them.)

A visitor from United States posted Thu December 15, 2005:
I love the tremendous detail conveyed in this photograph although the tragedy is a pity.

A visitor from United States posted Thu December 15, 2005:
Southwest is my favorite airline and I am heart broken that this beatiful Boeing will be scraped

A visitor from Canada posted Thu December 15, 2005:
REALLY nice picture, but I am sad about the little boy who has been killed ... R.I.P.

A visitor from Canada posted Wed December 14, 2005:
I regret to say that it is a great angle for the shot of a sad situation. Condolences goes out to the family of the child. God Bless.

A visitor from Malta posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Altough this is a superb shot well done for the capture, one must not forget that little 6yr child under the plane who lost his life..Rest in peace my friend....

A visitor from Canada posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Can any one tell me will this plane be dumped or is it repairable enough for it to fly again?

A visitor from Croatia posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Sadly, this accident is a proof that it is statistically more likely to die in a car, than in a plane.

A visitor from Norway posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Oh, I feel terribly sorry for this boy!
Sincere condolences.
Good photo anyway.

A visitor from Pakistan posted Wed December 14, 2005:
This is an awesome picture.....i salute the person who took it.

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Midway's Runways need to be longer than 6000 feet.

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 14, 2005:
It's an unusual photo. You don't see a plane in the intersection every day! It's terrible that a little boy died.

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 14, 2005:
How about some respect for the dead child's family? Some of you people are pathetic and make me sick.

A visitor from Mexico posted Wed December 14, 2005:
A very good approach, this accident was a worldwide news

A visitor from Poland posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Good photo. Good job !!!

A visitor from Greece posted Wed December 14, 2005:
People should really consider putting a sandbox at the end of each runway. That little boy would be alive today.

A visitor from Canada posted Wed December 14, 2005:
On a lighter note the irony I see in this photo is the sign that says Midway with the arrow.... You'd think it should be pointing straight ahead....

A visitor from Poland posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Superb photos. Excellent and you are only one person who take photos in this accident. Pozdrawiam Mati

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Not knowing the true circumstances and the tragic consequences of this accident, it would almost appear that the pilot got lost and just wanted to have a closer look at the sign directing him back to the airport.

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Very sad to hear that a person died in this incident, especially being a young child. In this photo though, I like the sign pointing in the other direction to Midway airport.

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Very sad...

A visitor from Poland posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Yes, I think Gabriel's photo is superb and the best I see. Pozdrawiam

A visitor from Canada posted Wed December 14, 2005:
A specatular landing but unfortunately killing a child in the car. This is so far the only picture I've seen of the crash other than what I saw on TV.

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 14, 2005:
It's uniquely awkward. Everything is normal with this picture except that, well, there is a huge plane sitting in the street. No carnage anywhere.

A visitor from Germany posted Wed December 14, 2005:
It`s so sad to see something like this :-(
But good picture Gabriel!!

A visitor from Honduras posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Well, this is a non-common situation for an aircraft, even though there is nothing to be happy about 'cause a boy died, the photo is interesting.

A visitor from Germany posted Wed December 14, 2005:
It is a good shot but I am not lucky to see such an accident.

A visitor from Israel posted Wed December 14, 2005:
What an awful sight =(

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Let that little boy RIP. altough quite sad, it is a good angle.

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Nice Shot, pictures the accident scene perfectly.
A Very Bad Day for all concerned, may the boy RIP.

A visitor from Malaysia posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Wow! that shot may be very hard to take!

A visitor from Germany posted Wed December 14, 2005:
What a tragic ending!
There is nothing else to say!

A visitor from Netherlands posted Wed December 14, 2005:
I like the angle (because the whole plane fits the picture)and the reflection of the tail in the water at the bottom of the picture.

A visitor from Spain posted Wed December 14, 2005:

A visitor from United Arab Emirates posted Wed December 14, 2005:

Its really sad to see these beauties like this! Notice the rudder!!

A visitor from Mexico posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Excellent moment

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 14, 2005:
The reason why the plane went through the fense was the reverse thrusters were not working eventhough the plane just had a routine maintenence check the wednesday before the incident.

A visitor from Brazil posted Wed December 14, 2005:
I used to live nearby and I´ve always wondered when something like that would happen!

A visitor from Venezuela posted Wed December 14, 2005:
The rate is not because of the photo/photographer is because it's always a shame to see this kind of pictures. My respects to the family of the little boy! Rest in peace and God bless him!

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Just an incredible and sad sight to see.

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 14, 2005:

Unusual picture

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 14, 2005:
In Southwests 35 year history they had never had an accident resulting in death. It sad that the boy was killed along with a beautiful plane being most-likely totalled beyond reapair. : (

A visitor from Hungary posted Wed December 14, 2005:
It's sad to see the aftermath of this incident, reminds me of pictures of the Southwest incident in Pasadena. Glad everybody on-board survived, could have been a lot worse by the look of things.

A visitor from Canada posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Thanks for the nice picture! My heart goes to 6 years old boy and his family

A visitor from Mexico posted Wed December 14, 2005:

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Wow, heck of a shot! Gives a great impression of the size of a 737 in an intersection!

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Great detail in this picture. I love the angle you used. it's "hit car" not "hitted car." Also, anyone see that "Midway" sign on the lightpoles? Great stuff.

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 14, 2005:
Wow - CNN would have liked to have had this picture! The best shot of the accident yet!
