Delivered as emergency aid by the Russians to quell a communist insurgency on the island in 1971, this two seater acted as the trainer for 5 MiG 17F that were part of the package. Pressed into service, these aircrafts acted more in a "shock and awe" role working with ground troops in scaring the shotgun equipped rebels into submission after a few weeks of turmoil. The MiGs equipped #06 squadron but were retired by 1980. The second generation of MiGs (MiG 27) of the SLAF serve with the #12 squadron now.
