In 1979 the SLAF lost its jet status when the last of the jets were retired. With a commercial operation supporting tourism and ferrying VIPs, the SLAF had become a ceremonial force. However, India's geopolitics meant that the SLAF had to start fighting an internationally financed terrorist group who got increasingly sophisticated. The FT-5 were bought to start the transition to jets. From this humble start, the 2010 SLAF is one of the most experienced and combat capable small jet airforces in the world.
