Of all the 990s to end up preserved in a first-class museum I'm delighted it's this one. As a college student I visited the picturesque town it's named for, St. Gallen, in 1968 during my first trip abroad. A few years later I flew Zurich-Tel Aviv on a Swissair 990. The plane's name St. Gallen stuck in my mind because it was my first (and only) 990 and because I'd been to the town.

Years later I visited it in Lucerne, where this pic was taken. Knowing it was there was my reason for going to the museum. Only when I saw it on display, sadly stilled but at least forever safe from the torch, did I learn they chose to preserve this one because it had served Papal duties. Heck, here I thought they'd kept St. Gallen because they knew it's the one I'd have chosen if they'd asked!

I only flew on Convair's speedsters twice, but the first time was even more significant to me because it was my first flight ever. It was as a teen, by myself on a "Yellowbird" Northeast 880 from Miami to Montreal via Boston. Later I learned other jets didn't pin you back in your seat at takeoff like those hot rods, but it was a great way to get inaugurated.
