A visitor from Netherlands posted Sun November 30, 2008: With the arrival of the widebody freighters such as the MD-11, this sight has become rarer ever since. The last time I saw it, was back in 2001 I think, on a South African Airways Jumbo in Johannesburg. Obviously, this only a way of ferrying, not powering. Btw, there are some real good pictures of this technique on A.net; simply search for all 747 types and add keyword "five", or "engine".

I saw a similar extra engine on a Chinese 747 (can't remember the airline) at Paris Orly in August 1981 as an 11-year-old on holiday from Dublin (flew there on Aer Lingus of course before they switched to CDG). I mentioned this to several people since who thought I was imagining it. Now I know it DID happen. Thanks for the post!
