Turning point in aviation or not, she's is a legend to me anyway... and utterly jaw droppingly beautiful. In fact I'd say she's the fourth most beautiful aircraft ever designed, built, and flown after the Spitfire (especially the original one with 3 blades), being consequent then also the Messerschmidt BF 109 and the Douglas DC-3. The Boeing 747 and all the jets and the great looking Tomcat come later than these legendary planes.

Wonderful photo. In those days you would never see anyone traveling wearing jeans.

A visitor from United States posted Fri November 27, 2009:
I do believe that the creation of the constellation was a turning point in aviation, it was such a capable aircraft and it was eve designed by Howard Hughes to beat the less capable Boeing at the time. It really did set the standard for long range travel.

A beauty arrives on a beautiful early Autumn day fifty-five years ago!

Captures the era stunningly well - only 9 years after the end of WW2. The uncluttered look of Heathrow (concrete taxiway and simple grass edging)is clearly seen in the photo and you can almost hear the rumble of those four engines.

How much we modern travelers could learn from the golden age of transatlantic flying! Just stare at this picture a while..
