Was a governmental aircraft serving Bulgaria's leader during the communist regime - Todor Jivkov (BTJ - Bravo Todor Jivkov). This airplane was sunk 22 meters deep into the Blak Sea as a divers attraction, about 700m off the coast of Varna. This aircraft set a world record for the biggest airframe sunk intentionally. Last flight - LZ9149 on 16.09.1999

Definitely a better fate than meeting the scrap man! It will make a good artificial reef and interesting diving spot for centuries.

Stellar, truly five-star picture of a strange, irrational and inexplicable sinking that I never understood (I've known about this for a while)

Surely will make an interesting diving spot. Let's hope those divers won't know anything about aircraft so that they don't get mystified by the shape of its tail ;-)

What if they install some sort of submarine engine on this thing and "fly" it under the sea? Just dreaming awake here...

It is photographically well composed and exposed, sharp and shows the aircraft in good detail and during a key moment. The explanation is detailed, accurate and rather curious, too.

Great shot. Looks like they left the cabin doors off. Wonder if they blocked them some other way or just left them off so divers can get inside..

There is a point in putting a plane in the sea, refer to the 1st. comment by TriJetsFan. Many old ships have been scuttled to create artificial reefs and diving spots, so why not a plane?!

Great pic! As a diver, I definitely see a point to sinking an aircraft! Wreck dives are great, especially ones where you can enter the wreck. This will be an aircraft you can enter - how cool is that? 22 meters is also a very good depth, giving you a reasonable amount of bottom time in which you can explore the aircraft. I think I need to go to Bulgaria for one of my next holidays! :-)

Great photo. Love the way the water just covers the wings enough that you can still see them. As it disappears
