K4879 The sole type 138A high-altitude research aircraft. It gained the world altitude record in September 1936, attaining 49,967 ft. After this was surpassed by Italy, it reclaimed the record with 53,967 ft on 30 June 1937, flown by an RAE pilot from Farnborough. Obtained from Bristols 60 years ago.
