The suberb de Havilland Mosquito, with its lightweight wooden construction and pair of Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, was (for most of the war) the fastest aircraft of WWII on either side. The Mossie was faster than a Spitfire or 109 and could out-climb and out-turn both. In fact the Wooden Wonder performed so well she needed little defensive armament and could penetrate deep into enemy territory even during daylight. Preserved at the Yorkshire Air Museum.
