The deserted airfield at North Witham in Lincolnshire photographed from Nimrod MR1 XV230. Built in 1944 and allocated to USAAF IX Troop Carrier Command HQ, it was abandoned in 1956 and incorporated into Twyford Wood by its owners, the Forestry Commission, its life as an airfield was short. Now the most notable things flying from here are two rare species of insect, the Dingy and Grizzled skipper butterflies. My thanks to Neil and Julia Smith of Custom Fencing Crowland, for the detailed history of this airfield.
