A visitor from Japan posted Sun July 2, 2006:This is the classic b-52g photograph of the sort often used by units for public relations photos. from this angle the aircraft's discerning features can be clearly seen and the photograph really conveys the power and grace of the huge aircraft in its climb. the b-52G is not an easy aircraft to photograph at ground level and one must get somwhat below or above it, as with an air-refueling shot, in order to capture its image in natural perspective with a long lens. i helped maintain this particular aircraft when i was a young air force member in 1966 and 67 stationed at griffiss in the 416th bomb wing. i worked on its very complex fuel and water injection systems, repairing the integral wing tank leaks and replacing the fuselage fuel cells and fittings, checking all pumps, valves, probes and related accesories and performing very complex maintenance operations inside the wing and body tanks to replace them. this photo brings back personal memories, including the colors of late autumn in the mohawk valley and the approach of the harsh winter that made maintenance and operations no task for the faint of heart. now griffiss air force base is closed and the 416th is no more, and the sac flying and alert and our maintenance efforts belong to history. aviation is in many ways like a fine summer afternoon or a clear moonlit night, a very ephemeral activity, costly and the result of many talented people coming together and this photograph with its inclusion of the last traces of autumn conveys an appreciation of this. | |
