76-1605 (cn 21435/924) Taken atop a barrel roll of F-4E, 66-0323 above this formation of Boeing E-3A, 76-1605, F-4Es, 66-0330 and 66-0382. This photograph was a well kept secret for some years, as the pilot specifically asked that it not be shown to USAF officials, because one was not supposed to roll around the E-3A! The snow on the ground makes the airplanes difficult to spot, but it is something not likely to be done again.

This rare shot had to be taken from a third escort fighter, which had to barrel-roll over the AWACS.very unusual perspective.

I absolutely love the tense, Cold War espionage feel to this shot.

The white on white aspect of the image is unintentionally beautiful, even though the AWACS aircraft is white for a different reason altogether. Overall the composition and the clarity contribute to produce a very subdued but powerful photograph. Five stars plus.
