Except for its lack of a turbocharger, the P-39 was a fine fighter design. And that turbocharger wouldn't matter at low level, where the engine could get all the boost it could handle from its own internal blower. Low level is exactly where the Soviets were doing their air combat. They were protecting their ground troops from German close-support aircraft and protecting their own close-support aircraft from German fighters. Keep in mind also that many of the German planes killed by Soviet Airacobras were not fighters themselves; only the fighters would have posed any challenge.

Could use some work. But who knows how the locals feel about putting money into that kind of project? And how the Hell did the Soviets manage to shoot down so many damn German planes with P-39's. Is it really 99% attributable to the height at which the Soviet strategy dictated interception, dogfighting??
