45-21749 (cn 13642) Perhaps not quite what she seems, this B-29 is in fact 45-21748, which left active USAF service in June 1954 and was allocated as a Ground Instructional Airframe at Chanute AFB in Illinois. It was later transferred to the museum there and painted to represent the "Enola Gay". When Chanute AFB was closed in 1993 she was acquired by the Sandia National Atomic Museum at Kirtland AFB where I caught her just a year later, inaccurately marked as '45-21749'. |

A visitor from United States posted Mon June 23, 2008: On june 5, 1945 my uncle alex zamry died piloting a 29 back to calcutta from a bombing mission. his plane ditched 60 miles from shore. i often search the history files to see what i find. this restored picture is a reminder of what our men went to war in to fight for freedom. |
