61-0032 (cn 464459) Touching down on 20C this Stratofortress was a welcome visitor. A massive plume of smoke bellows out from the underside as this classic touches down.

VERY unique perspective. I used to work on B-52s and the smoke from touch down actually looks like when we serviced liquid oxygen there at the back of the plane. You had to overservice it until it flowed out the overflow port, and then close it off. Created a heck of a cloud just like in this photo. To add to another comment, every aircraft crabs into the wind during cross wind landings. The difference between the buff and every other aircraft is that the buff has cross wind landing gear. Both the forward main gear and the aft main gear have steering actuators which can be used together so that the buff does NOT have to straighten up at touchdown during a cross wind approach. The buff touches down in a crabbed position but steers straight down the runway. Go Big Ugly Friendly Fellow!

A visitor from United States posted Sat January 1, 2011:
A very interesting photo of one of the most successful a/c of all time.
BTW......to those concerned about the outer gear hitting the lights....the runway is MUCH wider than the span of the gear; it just looks close due to the camera being on the center line, plus the "compression" effect of the tele lens. Trust me...this was all "thought out" prior to making the decision to land at this airport.
You should see"BUFF" sitting down in a heavy X wind; they actually come in at a few degrees out of parallel to the runway, to compensate for the X wind!
(very "hairy" until you've done a few!") (which all "BUFF" pilots have.)

A visitor from Mexico posted Thu January 5, 2006:
It´s always amazing to see a BUFF (Big Ugly Fat Fellow as they call the B-52)landing. That wingspan takes all the runway side to side i hope the wingtip gear doesn´t tear up the beacons. T.B.

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Thu January 5, 2006:
A truly amazing shot. One of my favorite airplanes too. Well done.

A visitor from United States posted Thu January 5, 2006:
This is an amazing airplane. I work close to Barksdale, in Bossier City...I watch these bad boys come in and out all day......Finesse = 0. :)

A visitor from United States posted Wed January 4, 2006:
This is a callback from the times my brother was in the Alaskan Air Command with SAC, loadig the A-bomd into the hold of the belly of the B-52, we were very proud of his service. As we are grateful of the last 50 years of the service of the B-52, great years of service to this day, the country admires all of it.

A visitor from Germany posted Wed January 4, 2006:
