63-7980 (cn 18597) Great to see this old lady back in the air after over a year due to major overhaul. She came out of the hangar two weeks ago and for the first time in Europe wearing her brand new livrery. 412th Flight Test Squadron "Speckled Trout" based at Edwards AFB. Short final RWY 05 as Trout99.

Seems some Air Force generals are waxing nostalgic. Nice capture and interesting reinterpretation of the KC-135

By the way, this is back to the future, isn't it? Isn't this the original paint scheme for these birds?

Believe me, an airline would go broke if it took 60 days to do a phase check. It doesn't take nearly a year to do a restoration of such an aircraft. Wide body aircraft , it takes an army of people 30 days to do a mini-overhaul (phase check) on a wide body aircraft. This aircraft would be somewhat quicker. Any longer is economically unfeasible. No hangar can be tied up that long with one aircraft. Not even a military hangar. They have other aircraft to service you know.

A visitor from United States posted Tue April 2, 2013:
30-60 days is a Phase Check. When they say 'Overhaul' it could be quite extensive. Tinker AFB Depot can tear a C-135 variant down and fix most anything. This airframe likely had some issues that needed heavy work. The economics of it are why they are buying the KC-47A, but also why there are still K/C-135

I like the subject and the background.
And this painting scheme is so much better than the "all grey" one.

Wow, great photo for many reasons but especially for the subject matter. It doesn't take a year to overhaul an aircraft. More like 30 days, 60 days for a complete restoration. I wonder what took a year to complete. That sounds economically unfeasable.
