Remark Photographer
22-325 The US entered World War I in Apr-1917 without any contemporary aircraft and were faced with choosing a European fighter to buy and produce locally. They quickly decided on the Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a and purchased 38 from the British. From an order of 1000 aircraft, Curtiss only built one prior to the end of hostilities. A further 56 were imported from Britain. Fifty examples were fitted with 180-hp Wright-Hispano engines and clad in plywood by Eberhardt Steel Products, and re-designated S.E.5e.
