The Warthog can fire somewhere in the range of 60-70 rounds per second. At that rate a 1/2 to 1 second burst is enough to completely disable a main battle tank. So firing for 18 seconds is unlikely to ever be necessary.

To some the sight of the warthog means death,to others it assures safety and to the oppress nation it means freedom. r ovalle iah mechanic

What situation could possible call for the need to fire non-stop for 18 seconds? Not much of a problem if you ask me. I doubt it carries 18 sec worth of rounds... too heavy at that firing rate w/ DU rounds...

Incredible shot, that has a double meaning.

Great shot, keep up the good work

And this aircraft was built around the gun...

A visitor from United States posted Sun August 6, 2006:
Great shot, the A-10 is a great weapons platform, but the only bad thing is that it can only have constant fire for only about 18 seconds, any longer and the barrels will melt. NOW THATS POWER!!

A visitor from United States posted Sun August 6, 2006:
WHAT A SHOT!! I love this airplane, when that gun fires you can hear it from miles away. This isthe ultimate tank-buster!!!

A visitor from United States posted Sun July 23, 2006:
Great shot! The A-10's gun doesn't generate more recoil than the thrust from the engines, otherwise it couldn't fly and fire (It's be like a strong reversor). But it does, however, slow the aircraft down up to 30 knots.

A visitor from United States posted Mon July 17, 2006:
Great timing, Awesome Photo! 2 of these planes were following me July 11 2006 while I was dirt bike riding in the trails between Grayling and Gaylord. What a sight! - Let's see more from Grayling, Steve.

This is a very nice picture of the A-10. I like how it's shooting it's gun. What is the price tag on a A-10?

A visitor from United States posted Thu June 29, 2006:
Amazing, especially being able to see the projectile leaving the gun.

A visitor from United States posted Sun June 25, 2006:
WOW What an amazing picture!!!

A visitor from United States posted Fri June 23, 2006:
The A-10 "Warthog" flies relatively slow but is a real tankbuster.

A visitor from United States posted Thu June 22, 2006:
Amazing photo Steve! You rock!

A visitor from United States posted Wed June 21, 2006:
That's an armor piercing round.

A visitor from United States posted Tue June 20, 2006:
In response to the German wrighter below: Yes, that is true. Firing depleted uranium shells at such high velocity is bound to generate some awesome recoil.

5 stars.

This is a great action shot, I live next to the airport where this plane is based and get to watch them all the time. Though, no like this!

A visitor from United States posted Tue June 20, 2006:
Wow, nice action shot!

A visitor from Germany posted Tue June 20, 2006:
Excellent timing! Now if only the weather...

Isn't the recoil of that gun actually stronger than the thrust from the engines? Or is that just another aviation fairytale?

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Tue June 20, 2006:
I love the A10, built to take a lot of stick, a machine gun with a plane attachted, fantastic !
