Long story short, originally it was supposed to be called the RS-71 for Recon/Strike. Someone mixed the letters up. Lockheed decided to stay with the mix up, in hopes of striking fear into the hearts of the Soviets. By the way, good capture.

It wasn't a stealth fighter, it was a reconnaissance aircraft and was used for spying.

By the way, SR71 is a spyplane (and successor of U2), not a fighter...
