Long story short, originally it was supposed to be called the RS-71 for Recon/Strike. Someone mixed the letters up. Lockheed decided to stay with the mix up, in hopes of striking fear into the hearts of the Soviets. By the way, good capture.
Still holds the record for the fastest plane to date if I'm not mistaken.
It was the worlds fastest spy plane.
It wasn't a stealth fighter, it was a reconnaissance aircraft and was used for spying.
Great plane, whish I had seen it! By the way, SR71 is a spyplane (and successor of U2), not a fighter...
Great capture of a historical moment... was the sr-71 america's first stealth fighter? we may never know...
