55-3520 / 6 (cn 223-202) This is a photo taken at the 1967 Tinker Air Force Base open house.Then Capt. Merrill “Tony” McPeak but now Chief of Staff of the USAF Ret. flew the number 6 bird on the right. Two months after this, McPeak, on Oct. 21, 1967 at Laughlin AFB Del Rio, Texas pulled the wings off old number six going up through the center of the bomb burst snap rolling. Search the net. From reading McPeak's account, he didn't pull the wings off in the actual snap roll--he never got that far. The wings failed in the high-G pullup into the climb which would lead to the snap roll.

I looked up (McPeak bomb burst) and read the incredible story that Tony tells about the explosion of this F-100D. This really is a must read if you love the F-100 and some great inside the Thunderbirds airshow information, thanks for the heads up on this story.
