159232 / WH (cn 712141) The first USMC Harrier jets, including this one on display aboard the USS Intrepid, were built by Hawker Siddeley in Great Britain. Known as AV-8As, they were converted into AV-8Cs by addition of a Radar Warning Receiver and chaff ejector. A total of 102 single-seat AV-8As were purchased by the USMC for use in close air support, interdiction, and reconnaissance.
