A visitor from - posted Tue October 16, 2012: Just saw this aircraft do virtually the same take-off out of SFO...without the JATO rockets. Not once, but TWO days in a row. I've seen it with and without the JATOs and I swear he did just as good without them. Two days in a row. I'm not saying the JATOS aren't necessary. I'm sure that if you had it at max takeoff weight you'd want even more than 8 JATOs.

A visitor from - posted Mon September 7, 2009: Fat Albert is light on his feet! Re: The post asking about the rocket exhaust contacting the skin of the aircraft... (1) the JATO units are mounted on the main landing gear sponsons, which extend out from the sides of the fuselage, and (2) the units are canted away from the fuselage, ie, the thrust does not project parallel to the line of flight. Hope this helps. No slack in Marine Air!!!

A visitor from - posted Sun June 28, 2009: 4 stars. But I have a question - Is it safe to have the hot jet exhaust in direct contact with the skin of the airplane ? I would imagine it would set up a temperature differential (this would have long term structural consequences ?) ...as well as, spoil the paint job ? :)
